Hi all,

Need to upgrade my PC, it's finally given up the ghost on me.

Asus P7P55D-E Rev 1 (Bios up to date) - Is now dead..
Intel Core i5 760
8GB RAM (2x4GB) Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24
ATI Radeon 6850
500GB Samsung 840 Evo - Main OS
1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm - Data Drive
OCZ 600MXSP PSU

I would like the Corsair Carbide 240 Air case as I'm fed up with my tower sat by my desk and the 240 fits in my bookcase ;) (open backed so plenty of ventilation).

So, firstly is there anything from the above remnants I can re-use (obviousy my drives).
I already have a monitor (Dell U2410), keyboard and mouse, Windows 8.1 Licence.

I want something that will last me (it's been 8 years I think since I bought previously, apart from the HD upgrade). I use my PC for work, bit of warcraft / skyrim and photo editing).

I'm looking a budget of around the £800 mark.

As stated above above, the existing motherboard is toast, I've test all the other components apart from CPU and they are working fine. So I need to replace my PC asap really.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi,

I think you can keep the RAM, maybe PSU (how old is it) and drives (are they all SATA?).

Thanks for coming back so quick!

@stulid
The PSU I think I got with my original build, so it would be 2008 maybe. It's half semi modular. To be safe, no idea whether it was PSU that caused the old mobo to go, maybe it's best to replace it.
Both drives are SATA yes.

@Doomedspeed
I as thinking one of the sealed unit water coolers, heard from colleagues that they can be noisy? I had looked at the Corsair H100 as it is mentioned in the review on the case (obviously both same company..) Is the CM your preference or is it generally better?

Thanks again :)

1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 WindForce OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N970WF3OC-4GD) £281.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H105 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060016-WW ) £83.99
1 x Corsair Carbide Series Air 240 High Airflow PC Case - Black (CC-9011070-WW) £71.99
Total : £749.51 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I had that in basket but no PSU.

Similar to the one above so thinking along the same lines.

These coolers arent noisy, the fans plug into the board and you can control them via software if you want, or just let them do their thing.

Yeah, the h100i fans are REALLY loud on 100% but if you set them to 50%-60% there pretty good. Though a pair of sp129s are better still.

The fans on this CM Cooler are pretty good noise wise, as well as performance.

My issue with the h105 is width. Fitting it in the front may means it cones very close to the back of the GPU. Very good cooler though. Also the windforce is s very long card. I'm not convinced they both fit stu?

Even though that OCZ PSU is still decent internally bring 6 years old a replacement may be on the cards. Especially as it can be easily worked into the budget.

thanks :)

I have my basket, going to sleep on it and order in the morning.

I'll check back here first in case anyone else has any recommendations, thanks all for you help this evening, very much appreciated :)

What is your basket? We can only reccomend changes if we can see it .. :)

The infinity card is the way to go. For the little extra money it has a high core speed and silence garenteed. :).

Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 - Devil's Canyon i5 4690K CPU & Micro ATX Motherboard Bundle **£10 Saving**
KFA2 GeForce GTX 970 OC Silent "Infinity Black Edition" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **WorldWide Exclusive**
Corsair Hydro H105 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060016-WW )
Corsair Carbide Series Air 240 High Airflow PC Case - White (CC-9011069-WW)
SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)

I take it you still need Thermal Compound these days?

I was thinking about "trying" my existing PSU, I stuck a multimeter on it last night and it appears to be putting out what it says it should

One other thing about PSU's, I know my current one is semi modular and I think the one in your basket Doomed isn't. Can you get something like a heat shrinkable tube to cover the ugly mesh on the leads?

Order placed. Spoke to Rich in sales as the Mobo was out of stock, so swapped it for an Asus Gryphon Armour.

Thanks very much for your help guys, I'll get a pic up when it's built.

Special thanks to Rich @ OC Sales, very polite and accommodating. Working in customer service myself, I was very impressed with his service. Give that man some cake! :)

Ah, whoops, nevermind, I doubt it goes off, so I'll leave it sealed in a drawer for when I upgrade the CPU to an i7 maybe in a couple of years.

Looking forward to my delivery tomorrow and a busy weekend ahead.

I'll also start tucking some more away to get the PSU and RAM upgraded.

I've seen some Project Builds on here where people have a subtle LED hidden away in the case that puts a nice glow through the window. I'm having the Carbide on it's side, will window upwards, how do people do this, is it a simple thing, plug in to a set of pins on the MB or more complex?
