I am currently using:

P5K3 Deluxe core 2 quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
My current graphics card is GeForce 9600 BFG

I am a total newbie here and have no idea of what type of graphics card, memory or SSD type my board can take. I would be very grateful if someone can help me as I want to upgrade my rig.

What graphics card, memory, ssd do you recommend so I have some sort of guide as to what I am looking for.

Thank you

Yes that memory should work fine with your board.

SSD wise any ssd will work fine but you will only see sata 2 speeds no matter what because that is what your board has. That is still plenty fast though.

Graphics card wise all modern cards will be compatible but it is worth noting that you only have PCI-e 1.0 which might be a bottleneck on very high end cards. When you use the blue slot on your motherboard for a graphics card it will run at x16 speed. This is equivalent to x8 pci-e 2 speed which is still enough for most cards and plenty for the level of card £150 will buy you.

If you can stretch your budget slightly this is a substantially better card than the one you have linked to: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-185-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411 or where you hoping to spend some of that £150 on something else?

The comment about CPU bottlenecking is a good point actually - and while we are on the subject, what kind of cooling you do currently have?

I bought this PC a few days ago off gumtree for £170.00. I don't know much about PC's so this looked a good deal for me.

It came with:
-Decent full gaming case

-Razor Habu mouse and Reclusa Keyboard

-Corsair TX750W Power Supply

- scythe Mugen CPU cooler -

I don't know if this PC has ever been clocked ans I have no idea how. But I am on a budget and have £150 left to spend.

I have posted some info below. Your replies have been very helpful. I thank you already.

Ram wise 4GB is enough for most tasks still so I wouldn't worry about upgrading it on such a tight budget.

I would definitely overclock your CPU. The mugen is a decent CPU cooler despite its age and should overclock a q6600 well enough. Do you happen to know whether it is a B3 or G0 stepping version? If not you can download and run cpu-z to find out: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html (download links are on the right hand side). Either way you should be able to reach 3Ghz ish, probably a bit more with the G0 version with that cooling.

So that just leaves the SSD and graphics card. An SSD will significantly improve boot times and application load times but won't really add anything to gaming performance. Maps will load a bit faster for instance but your FPS will be largely unaffected.

A new graphics card will produce a very noticeable improvement in gaming performance but obviously won't speed up your computer in every day use.

£150 is really only enough to buy 1 of these things (or at least a decent, future proof one). If you try to buy both with that budget you will end up with a compromise on both sides which isn't really the way to go imo. Therefore my advice is if your main concern is gaming then buy a graphics card now and an SSD later, and if your main concern is work and productivity then buy an SSD now and buy a graphics card later

Graphics card wise the best value for money at the moment (in my opinion) is the 7870 that I linked to in my earlier post. If you absolutely must save that extra £10 then you could go for a 7850 but I would get the 7870 if you can. They are both much better cards than the GTX 650 you asked about though.

SSD wise the samsung 840 series, Toshiba HG5D, Crucial M4 (and probably their other SSD's too) are all very safe bets. I realise your motherboard only has sata 2 and therefore you could get a cheaper Sata 2 SSD but I don't see the point considering what the price difference would actually be.

Hope that helps a bit more

It has 4gb RAM so we can leave that for now, 8gb RAM would take a good chunk of your budget. As for RAM speed you will hardly notice any performance difference.

The PSU is a good one too (better remove that junle link to it, it's against forum rules), so will be fine powering any card.

Hence I would say the 7850 that I linked or if you can really stretch to it the 7870 BluSky linked will be your best option to increase gaming performance.

But you really do need to overclock the CPU, this will hold back the GPU from performing at it's full potential.

On the other hard I noticed this in the dxdiag mess:

Total Space: 152.5 GB

Under Start, Computer, is that really how much space you have in the PC? Is that enough for you? Most high end games takes a good fair chunk of space (about ~20gb each).

Wow, wow , wow. Thank you so much for your time and help. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you help.

Thank you overclockers forums, thank you; BluSky, Orcvader, Doomedspeed your knowledge and information you have provided is so appreciated and will be a big, big help to me.

I will definitely purchase the 7870 from overclockers and then look to get a new SSD card.

I have made this small video of my Rig using cpu-z. I will delete the video as soon as you've seen it.

Here is my PC temp using 'core temp':

Does my temp look OK?

Thank you again BluSky for providing the link. All I need to do now is clock it and maybe learn to update the BIOS.

Those temps a varied a bit too much for my liking. If you are comfortable doing so I would recommend re-mounting your heatsink and replacing the thermal paste. 50+ degrees at idle on cores 0 and 1 is too high. My q6600 g0 in a sugo sg05 running on almost passive cooling runs cooler than that... Also what case do you have and how do you have the fans set up?

The temps on my i5 2500k are kind of the sme in terms of variation.
core#0 is 10C cooler than core#3 and the other two being in the middle.
I have tried reseating and reapplying the cooler twice, trying different TIMs, still no changes.
So it could be a faulty sensor?

The idle temps do seem quite high.

Try running Prime95 (link here) for about 10 minutes and see what the temps are then. If it reaches 80c then I would stop it immediately.

Is there a guide how to re-mounting my heatsink and replace the thermal paste.

The temp got hot running it for under 1 min:
