Hi there,

I am looking to make a hdd virtually inaudible, unless you have super hearing, and i am looking to do it on a budget.

Basically, the drive i have is a 2.5" Toshiba drive, which is suspended (not screwed). It's quiet, don't get my wrong, but not quiet enough - i want silence.

I was looking to see if anyone had any ideas for a cheap was of silencing it? Currently, I can just about hear a high pitch kind of whining noise that i can hear from about 2 meters away (and closer obviously).

The idea is that i want this to be 24/7 on, and i sleep in the same room (about 2 meters away, so i need it to be as quiet as possible). At night, the hdd will be the only thing moving in the computer, the rest is passive (possibly a silentX fan on 5V)

Thanks.

lock it in a sound proof box XD
i dought u can silence it completely, if it matters that much get a solid state one =/ pricy....

or THE MOST CHEAPEST WAY!!!!!

move it further than 2m away from ** head when sleeping XD

cost for mod: £0
time taken: 1 min
sound reduction: 0%
sound heard from bed: 0%

If the HDD is indirectly suspended (so that no vibrations are passed to case) then the only other way to further silence would be more material between you and the disk, be it a thicker case, foam inlay etc.

Any chance of you being able to implement something like the Antec P180/P182 cases come with? They're like a very soft bushing, do an awesome job.

this is a toughie, apart from packing it in foam then suspending the box i don't really know what to suggest.

This is i what i was thinking, but i have been doing a few tests and they havent come out too w dl.....

....also - I don't have a big enough box which is small enough to fit in the case.
