Hi Folks,

I'm looking for some systems management/inventory software that we can use for keeping track of all our hardware assets in the office. We're currently using a system called spiceworks however it doesn't have the features required. Basically wanting a breakdown of all the systems from servers to laptops, what spec they are, operating system installed, date of installation etc. Spiceworks is free however due to the heavy requirements we're able to pay what it takes basically so we can know everything about the systems when necessary. Does anyone know of any software that will do such things?

around 250+ desktops, 30 laptops, then all our servers. and of course all printers/scanners etc would need to be accounted for.

The inventory side of Landesk works fine, you can do more with it though, and this is where it's weaker in my experience.

The Management Gateway side of it can be very flakey in my experience. If you're using a PWAN you'ed be better off using 'Remote Desktop' for remote administration in my opinion, or VNC. Also, the Management Gateway Remote Control has to be run client-side before you can do anything remotely, which is 'ok' for remote assistance (once you've talked the user through starting it, which can be easier said than done when they don't know what the 'start menu' is) but not so good for any kind of general remote admin work of course.

I always found Landesk to be acceptable but never really all that good generally. However, I mainly used it as a way of remotely accessing machines, before we had setup and rolled out the PWAN at my company. If you're really only interested in the inventory side of it, then it's ok.

Yeah it would be mainly used for asset management, we use VNC for support purposes anyway so that feature wouldn't really be needed.

Can 100% recommend OCS Inventory, completely free :)

What would be wrong with a decent access database? I'm not clued up on this and i'm just honestly asking.
Decent inventory software can automatically report stuff like what software is installed, what hardware is in the machine, what user is logged on, right down to things such as the serial number of the hard disk.
With an access database etc, it would be 100% reliant on being kept up to date manually.
