I'm finally at a point where I can start shopping for something to cheer myself up with, after I sold my 182 a few years back. I'm also at a point where I don't have kids (for long?) and not many responsibilities/expenses.

I'm looking for a quick(ish) coupe for my commute and something fun for driving around the Welsh B roads on the weekend. Engine wise, I'm tempted by a V6, but not ruling out the 2.0TSFI on a TT for example.

I have a soft spot for the 350Z but I'm thinking the 3.2 TTs might be a bit more forgiving if I've not driven RWD before. The only other things coming into the search results are BMW 325/30s and although I like them, they're not really exciting me.

Is there anything I'm overlooking (or missing by limiting myself to a coupe)?

I could also save for a couple more months and include 370Zs or a TTS in the search, but these may be the bottom of the pile in terms of condition.

Z4 with a 6 cylinder eg 30i?

Ah yeah, had a few in my search results and is a consideration. Love the back end on them & definitely aged well imo. Probably worth test driving these 3 & then making my mind up.

10k will get you a mint low mileage 350z, get a pipe on it and they sound great. I haven't regretted 1 second since buying mine.

Nice. I've been reading into the engine to get, seeing most people say the 2007/08 HR is the way to go? Shame the daytona blue is so rare (not big issue :D).

Screw the TT, get a Z4 or 350! Rwd is fine if you just learn how to drive accordingly. These cars will have stability control too. Plenty of non-car people manage.

Also try an MX-5, it's not as fast as the others but more fun for sure! How much is the Toyota Gt86 these days?

Yeah it's probably just lazy thinking that the quattro will be as forgiving as the 182 for throwing around. Hmm, the MX5 is something that I admire but could never consider buying :D

The GT86 was coming in around £15k so a bit out of my budget.

Pull you ego out of your arse and drive one. You might be surprised ;)

Yep, get the HR version, you would be getting ripped off if you paid 10k for a DE. HR have more horsepower, xenon lights and a better interior and a different engine which is why they have a bulge in the bonnet as the engine profile is a bit higher.

Used GT86s are barely dropping in price, there aren't enough of them around. I bought mine around a year ago and it's barely lost anything in value and only because I put daily miles on it.

The MX-5 is a lot of fun though, if a bit less "hardcore" and tail happy.

There are some options if you wanted to stay with a Renault. The Clio 200 would be under budget and a Megane RS 250 should be achievable.

350Z. Easy to look after, uncomplicated, inexpensive and there are plenty of sensible and straightforward upgrades around. Gratifying to drive at sensible speeds, too. Fit an aftermarket exhaust, a noisier intake system – and stiffen it up slightly – and enjoy.

TT will likely get boring quite quickly, particularly in 3.2 form (as there's not a huge amount you can do to them).

I went for a Megane Rs250 when I was in similar position to you. Absolutely love mine. Remapped to 300bhp its quite a machine.

Handles so brilliantly.
