Looking for special protein powder

I've not used any of my brotein powder for at least 6 months. Eating meat is far more fun.

Protein powder is a good source if you're strapped for cash and/or really limiting your kcal intake I guess.

have you watched the latest BBC programme Trust me I'm a Doctor ?

I guess it depends on how much exercise/weights you do though and what your normal diet is

I stopped using Whey as an addition to my diet a good 6 months ago - but then I do eat fairly well/fairly carefully

I run 6 times a week (30+ miles), gym 3 times a week, and do Ice Skate training for 6 hours a week

and not noticed any negatives of removing it from my diet (so far)

As already mentioned, it's not some kind of miracle drug. It's simply something you can use to up one of your important macros if you're not getting enough from other sources.

I usually drink a shake before bed, because otherwise I can sometimes wake up with crippling hunger. Having a shake staves that off considerably.

Whey is cheap - at least when bought in bulk from MyProtein etc - and nutricious. I don't drink it very often though, it's usually either to make proats or mugcakes (beltsander brownie for the win). As others have said, it's just food - a dairy byproduct of the cheese-making process - 20g of protein a scoop or so, just one way of hitting whatever total or minimum protein target you have.

OP - if you buy unflavoured you can flavour it yourself easily enough. I find unflavoured rank myself so use MP's Flavdrops or various other means to jazz it up a bit.

As mentioned weather the protein does or does not do anything if its a placebo for my head that if I have a shake I get less cravings for food its worthy investment.
Also I put it on my desert to avoid using sugar and give it some flavour.

Program on TV last night did numerous tests with people of all ages doing controlled exercise and shakes for 8 weeks. Half had protein and half had a normal shake.

No evidence whatsoever that protein shakes did anything.

Just sayin'.

Protein + carbs provenly reduce recovery times

While shakes won't 'do' anything that other sources of protein wouldn't, IIRC in the program the people were only consuming the RDA for protein with and without the shakes; about 60g which meant it wasn't a particularly useful way of looking at higher protein intakes and exercise, and it's also way too low an amount for someone dieting, since protein is the most important piece of the diet in terms of being muscle-sparing and providing satiety.

Exactly the point they were trying to make as it is often marketed as some kind of miracle powder.

Strange, I only see it marketed as protein, which for people who understand diet and exercise tells them all they need to know.

If you exrevise in the morning and then don't consume decent quantithesis of protein until the evening 12.hours later then you have lost 12 hours of recovery time, which is pretty important if you are training the next day.

Same goes for glycogen, you deplete that it can take 48 hours to fully restock. if you don't eat carbs soon after exercise then the next session may be conducted with non-optimal glycogen stored and hard training will be impossible.

If you are aiming to exercise the next day you've got 24 hours to recover, you want the carbs and protein in your system as quickly as possible to maximize recovery time, not waiting until.the next big meal.

Then you're not looking very hard especially as you're over in the US, sports supplements are a multi million pound business these days and there's plenty of them that promise the world and then some just by having a serving a day.

Obviously anyone that's actually looked into them know that for the most part it's complete balls but they don't spend hundreds of thousands of pounds on advertisement and sponsorship for nothing, gullible newbies and people that believe in marketing hype make up a massive part of their user base.

You can't compare generic sports supplements to protein.

Here is the protein powder is Use and the marketing blurb
