Looking for the best < £550 Projector + 100" Screen (2.5m-3m throw)

Yeah I totally understand this but I just mean if I'm starting out why not buy a cheaper one? Are there any screens which you would recommend?

I got a Sapphire from Richer Sounds, I've seen 2 or 3 other makes and the Sapphire seems thicker material. My mates screen started to warp at the sides. The only problem I had was a plastic type smell that was quite overpowering for a while but now it's gone.
I'm moving my setup to a larger room next month so will definitely get a bigger Sapphire screen.

I had the Benq w1070 before moving house. Brilliant projector for the money. 3d was fantastic.

I had to rma it twice. First time the noisy fan started to get worse and the unit made a high pitch humming noise.

Second time the bulb went in under 300hours which benq replaced.

My mates bulb exploded when he watching watching to footy, that was on the 1080st, makes me cringe :D

I purchased one last month. Was torn between the Benq 1070 and the Optoma HD141x as most comparison threads seemed to decend into fanboyism. Went for the Optoma in then because it was sub £400 at the time.

Very happy with it. Great picture for me on a wall painted with dulux light and space. Considered a screen but decided for the room and the use, I didn't need one.

Cheap dlp link 3d glasses bought and 3d is great as a novelty.

First dlp projector. I notice the rainbows occasionally on some content but it doesn't bother me. (what really showed them up for me was Kodi's menus with aeon nox skin)

IME the screen really enhances the image, it frames it properly with a nice black border which makes it pop right out.

I guess if you emulated a border on the wall somehow you might get the same effect. But unless you do you are missing out as it makes a lot of difference.

Screenwise, I'd also recommend sapphire, currently on my second screen, both lasted the course with no wrinkles.

I only changed screens since I realised I could just squeeze a 122" screen in my room with 5mm either side to the bay walls! Previously I had a 108" screen.
For me, bigger is better, it's the same effect as going imax now! (That's the small imax screens, not the wrap around ones)

Projector wise, I would want short throw, as I'd have to keep putting it away, I have mine on topmmof a ttall 5 glass shelf unit, looks OK, even the Mrs thinks it's OK, and I can be watching a film in under 30 seconds.

Took the plunge guys - thanks for the advice!

I'm not being an ass here, but when you have £500+ sitting around to be spent, you woulda been better clearing that room out, plastering it, painting it and having a nice place to be. THEN buy and put up a screen.

Seems mad to do such a thing.

I'm redecorating the room soon - it doesn't need plastering, just decorating. The thanks for your input.....
