Looking for ultrawide 1440p monitor

not sure i'm keen on paying £200 g-sync tax, thats like half a new GPU

Yes that's true, but you have to remember how Freesync/Gsync extends the life of a GPU too due to being able to handle the lows much much better (so it saves you money in the longer term). Def worth getting an adaptive sync screen imo, once you have you'll never go back (and that Alienware does look the nuts) :)

as in gaming life or physical life? physically i've never really had problems with computer bits lasting less time than their planned upgrade time anyway

bleah, just found out the game I play most currently doesn't seem to support g-sync at UW resolutions!!! I thought it was a just a hardware thing (GPU to monitor) but apparently not.

very happy i checked, and i have no idea why i did...

I wasnt aware it was anything to do with the game at all (gsync). Pretty sure it is just a hardware thing?

that's exactly what i thought too until i read this:

Q: Does NVIDIA G-SYNC work for all games?
A: NVIDIA G-SYNC works with all games. However, we have found some games that do not behave well and for those, we recommend that users take advantage of our control panel’s ability to disable G-SYNC per game. Games that NVIDIA discovers that have trouble with G-SYNC will be disabled by default in our driver.

from here:

https://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/g-sync/faq

So it seems it os not a purely hardware solution and software is at least somehow involved in the whole g-sync thing. The game I play (ESO) seems to be fine with g-sync UNLESS you are using an UW monitor, in which case it doesn't work (but this is from me reading stuff on their forums prior to purchase)

After looking around i found this which seems ok https://www.overclockers.co.uk/aoc-...de-curved-led-monitor-black-si-mo-04f-ao.html
But was unsure about my 2nd and 3rd monitors perhaps the same agon type but I don't need full gaming response or refresh as these monitors are used for other tasks during gaming all I really am interested in is 1440p across all monitors and for them to look good together . Ie side monitors not taller than the ultrawide Tec as this is a large setup on a 2.5 meter desk in my living room so needs to look good as well as functional

Yea I noticed that I'm still unsure about panel types I've been using ips the last few years, before that I guess it was tn panels people seem quite split on what's best .?

I am no expert but my understanding is TN is fastest, IPS is best image quality, VA is highest contrast. There are a LOT of exceptions, like the new 34" Alienware is an IPS panel, but it's contrast is closer to TN levels (lower) than any other 34" IPS panel.

Problem is, there isn't really a best panel type. They all have pros and cons

You just pick what's suited to your needs.

TN is fast but poor colours and viewing angles. Ips has great colours and image quality but poor contrast and suffers with bleed and glow. Va has decent colours, reasonable viewing angles and great contrast, but can suffer with smearing in certain situations

Take your pick.

I’m also wondering about this. So if you don’t care about viewing angles – since I game sitting in front of my monitor (who are these people that sit off to the sides of their monitors!?) are TN panels arguably the best for gaming?

I’ve always gotten the impression (here anyway) that TN panels were somehow inferior to IPS etc. I’ve only ever had TN panels so have never tried IPS etc. but I’ve always found the colours etc. beautiful on TN panels (for me anyway, I’m not a graphic designer). Like the absolute best gaming monitors, are they generally IPS or VA or what?

Each have pros and cons, none is the best, and even if you're a gamer you may prefer the better colours of the IPS- but then playing certain games may be ruined with other problems - ie IPS uneven blacks, or poor blacks say in Alien Isolation or FEAR.

I use a 6 bit TN. Colours are acceptable but compared to watching on the Pioneer LX-5090, they look bland. I believe some new high end TN's are 8 bit.

Even if you're head on, you may see TN's poor angles, if you get a large flat screen. Sometimes on my 24" if I move a bit up and down on my chair there is some gamma change.

TN is best for gaming, however depends if you're a hard core gamer. Also cost- TN are cheaper so if you want a £150 panel TN is the way to go. Or if you just don't care just for browsing the web, emails etc.

If you're a pro twitch gamer then maybe TN is the best. But for me, angles and colours are poor.

I value image quality and contrast so a VA panel is my choice. I can put up with the odd bit of smear.

Although ips generally has better colours and minimal smearing, I cannot be doing with the panel lottery and grey blacks.

But of course your priorities may different.

Got a z35P the other day. Blacks weren't all that and the colour even after calibration is shocking. Even sat right in front of the 35" beast you can see colour shift from one edge to the other. Be on its way back to Acer on Monday. Will give it a couple of weeks and see if there's any concrete news for when the hdr units are coming.
