I'm looking to get myself some blu rays, either buying or renting and I'm looking for opinions on good films that look amazing in blu ray and utilise the 5.1 very well. I have seen a lot of blurays that hardly use the rear speakers or the sub and it's sort of wasted.

Anyone got any reccomendations on some blu rays that will make a big impact?

Psychological thrillers, action/adventure, comedies... not into horrors or love/romance

Thanks :)

Sorry, I should have mentioned... nothing with aliens or laser beams in it.

Is 2001 A Space Odyssey available on Blue Ray? Inception. Blade Runner.

and Bledd, for a moment there I thought you were suggesting a Half Life movie, I was like WHY DON'T I KNOW ABOUT THIS! :p

Avatar, Dark Knight, Fifth Element all look/sound great.

Oops saw the edit, ok The Dark Knight has some great IMAX shots. Inception, Master and Commander, Twister to exercise your sub.

Fifth Element is only available as a US import, but worth it. As has been said, The Dark Knight. I was really impressed by Hellboy 2, Blackhawk Down and new Star Trek.

The Pacific was pretty good visually.

The whole of the first scene in Dark Knight was shot in IMAX, so it looks gorgeous.

The first Iron Man I thought looked pretty good, and the Planet Earth series looks absolutely stunning (quite a few discs so probably worth buying instead of renting - can be had pretty cheap now).

Any of the recent BBC wildlife/nature documentary series are stunning in HD. For example, Plant Earth (as already mentioned) or Nature's Great Events.

'The Fall'
stunning movie; it's usually near the top of lists like this! full frame too.

crouching tiger hidden dragon is decent for 5.1 but to be honest I prefer films which are not so obvious about it. if you notice the surround sound it sometimes spoils it... if you get what I mean.

Ratatouille is also a good demo disc for sound as well as visuals. This also usually features at the top of these lists.

Can't think which film I'm trying to remember which was excellent for sound but it may have been terminator salvation?

[edit] I could not see what all the hype was about with blade-runner. It probs doesn't help that I just don;t like that film, but I still don't think it was a particularly good transfer or anything :S

I've added, "The Dark Knight" to my rentals list already... didn't realise it was going to be visually stunning. Looking forward to it now. Thanks for that.

Out of the ones I own the best are probably:

Avatar
Sin City
How To Train Your Dragon
District 9
2001: A Space Odyssey

Also Wall-E and Toy Story 3 both look very good.
