Looking into the 970 need advice

Ive gone for the gigabyte G1 card, im coming from a msi 290 gaming, so i shall see if its quieter or not, but tbh im not that bothered about it

just for your info, the BIOS updates for the ACX 2.0 for 0% fanspeed are live in our forumshttp://forums.evga.com/EVGA-GeForce-GTX-970-ACX-20-Firmware-Update-v11-m2228516.aspx#2228516 The 980s will have this update already installed.

I will be going over to the shop on Monday to buy a 970, EVGA ACX 2.0 is my first choice if any are in stock :)
Will report back here when it is all setup and working.

Galax EXOC - I have two, super quiet, no coild whine and overclocks well. Backplate included.

Emm,by the time you sold the R9 290X and paid for a new GTX970 its unlikely the lower power costs will actually add up - how many hours of games do you play each week OP?? If it is a reference R9 290X card, wouldn't getting a better cooler solve any noise problems??

If you sell the game code, your friend could get a GTX780 for under £180 delivered and that is one with a UK RMA base.

I wouldn't pick an Asus card or to be honest any Asus product as their RMA service is one of the worst in the business.

I disagree. Never had a problem with ASUS. I would recommend the ASUS 970 as its the quietest by far.

How many hours of gaming a week minimum 84 hours it adds up, going from a 300w card to a 145w card will make a difference, especially with the other changes plus funds to do this has come from selling old hardware I had so no real cost to me.

84 hours a week may seem a lot but remember we are stuck in the house 23/7 due to wife's disability and me being her primary carer, I wake up at 6 go to bed at 12 only so many books and films you can watch over 15 years games are a great release from all of that.

With all the changes factoring in the new psu's cards and systems, removal of items we are actually saving £40-50 per month in electricity.

57W to 78W IIRC according to the TPU figures.

At a 78W difference,it will cost you £1.17 a week extra at 84 hours a week,or around £60 a year at 18P a kWh. Also as winter is coming, that extra heat will be plonked into your room meaning it will be warmer! :D :p

My mate who runs scientific analysis programmes for months at a time, ends up never having to really put his heating on.

Plus you can always undervolt and underclock your R9 290X to find the optimal voltage.

I use only SFF PCs myself,so have done undervolting for loads of them.

TH figures say 60W to 70W:

Anandtech says 60W to 80W:

TR says around 100W:

http://techreport.com/review/27067/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-and-970-graphics-cards-reviewed

HC says 110W:

This one says 55W:

So even at 100W,that will save you around £78 a year.

But if you place less intensive games,ie,not things like Crysis3 for example, its even less of a difference.

TBH,if power costs are a major factor,I am surprised you didn't get a GTX780 instead of a R9 290X TBH. The former consumes less power anyway and remember we should be on 16NM/20NM by 2016 or even earlier if some of the rumours are true.

Makes me laugh when people say the power saving isn't much etc.

I bet they all have energy saving bulbs in their home ha

My problem is that when I started this project to refine the computers make them more efficient and reduce the number (from 7 to 4) it all adds up.

Tomorrow I travel to overclockers and pick up which ever 970 is in stock.

Well I grabbed a Galax 970 from the shop, installed and it works perfectly no coil whine.
Setting up dual display was so much easier than on the AMD and the picture from HDMI was much clearer.

Tested a few games, most intensive was space engineers mod I have with 70 ships and 4 stations, no slow down.

Will not be overclocking until I see a game that slows my system down, same goes for the 4970k I have, yes I could overclock this whole system but until a game comes along that slows the system no point.
