Basically I want a cheap .co.uk domain name, with dirt cheap hosting.

Only has to be say 10mb of webspace, if that. Not fussed about anything else really. Being able to run scripts would be a bonus.

Where would I get a .co.uk domain name with cheap hosting? Most places seem to just offer you the domain name - from then on, I'm baffled. :o

Does "Custom Perl CGI and PHP Scripts" mean I could put forum software on there, if I wanted to?

To run forums you will more than likely need MySQL, PHP and running Linux. (LAMP)

Most shared/virtual servers run linux and have those installed so your fine there. :)

I have registered domains with UK Reg before and they are excellent, they allow you to fully transfer your domain to diferent namesevers (allows you to assign the domain to your host's nameserver rather than using a redirect), I know some other companies are fussy about that.

Just to clarify what LAMP means:

Linux (OS), Apache (Webserver), MySQL (DB Server), PHP (Scripting Language)

You'll find most cheap hosting run LAMP configurations because all of the software is free open-source compared to a costly Windows ISS ASP server.

Yes - they offer PHP & MySQL which most forums use (phpBB, YaBB, SMF etc). They also use cPanel so it's more than likely that you'll be able to install some forums through the control panel :)

So after that, it's about finding myself a domain?

How do I tell my host to serve my domain?

I've been telling you... Vidahost, vidahost. Just put your hand in your pocket, do it and I'll help you understand. :p

If you're stuck with a dummy webhost, this post will be my evidence that I tried to stop you! :D

If you buy your domain with hosting it should be automatic but if you buy it from a separate company you'll need to go into the domain's control panel and set it to your host's nameservers (normally something along the lines of ns1.[the hosts's domain] so for example ns1.ubercoolhosting.com, and the same for ns2.[blah])

It will be a straightforward process of changing the nameservers with your domain registrar to point at the host, and then in your hosting control panel (cPanel for example) adding the domain as a parked domain or similar. :)
