Looking for a budget method to extract 5.1 or better from HDMI, this is so i can feed the audio into a bunch of amps and pa speakers for outdoor use. The best option so far appears to be a blueray player with analogue RCA outputs, is or was there such a machine with HDMI inputs so it can function as a dolby preamp.

Thanks.

Jon.

The BD player with a 5.1/7.1 output will work, but bear in mind that you probably won't have volume control from the player. If your mixer has enough spare channels then you could go via that.

Alternatives: AV pre-amp with HDMI in and DTS-HA/Dolby True HD processing. That's going to be expensive though. An AV Receiver with pre-outs will perform the same function, albeit in a heavier box. Since there are far more of these sold than pre-amps, and folk change models for new tech such as 3D, Audio Return Channel, 4K, ATMOS etc, then you have a better chance at finding a vanilla HD audio unit which is all you really need.

Pickings are a bit slim on Ebay at the moment. I was hoping to find some Denon AVR2809s or similar, or some Yamaha RX-V7xx series but what is there is posted at toppy sort of money.

Thanks for the info. I spotted this

No HDMI but i could use a laptop directly to the projector & a separate optical out audio card (assuming windows will feed multi channel audio from something like netflix)

I saw that Denon too.

I think it all depends on what's on your "must have" list, and how simple/complicated the system has to be.

If you're playing BD discs and you must have HD audio then a basic BD player plus HDMI-equipped AV receiver with pre-outs and HD audio decoding would be a simple soltution. (You could get the same result i.e. HD audio with an older receiver that has pre-Islamic coupled to a BD player with 5.1/7.1 analogue out.)
The HDMI decoding amp/receiver would be my first choice as it opens up the possibility of connecting other HDMI sources. This is in addition to Optical and Coax what both carry DD/DTS.

The only BD player that i know of that has 5.1/7.1 analogue out is the Panasonic DMP-BDT700, i know because i have one. If you wanted to play 4K then the Panasonic DMP-UB900 also has analogue out, again i know because i also have one as well. All analogue outputs on both players are gold plated RCA's.

If looking at older models, then there's quite a few: Panasonic BDT500, Pana BD55 & BD65, Samsung BD-J7500, quite a few of the Pioneer, Yamaha and Marantz models, Oppo, Cambridge Audio. For someone on a tight budget then these open up a lot of possibilities.

I assume your correct, can't be bothered to have a look lol :D Only mentioned those 2 because i have them both, so i know for certain :D

You can get HDMI audio splitters for <£20 on Amazon etc, they generally work well.

another limitation with blu ray players .. depends what you media source is, but the panasonic ub900 (&700 I imagine) do not playback hevc media from usb, so your media would have to be blu-ray/netflix or encoded mp4/h264, say. (...one of the reasons I did not buy a refurb £200 ub900 from Pan store)

HDMI Audi splitters still only work within the Digital domain, none of them will give the OP analogue audio out options.
from browser history - you can get analog splitter

Not sure where you heard that but you're wrong. Depends on the specific device of course. I personally have one with both optical (upto 5.1, including passthrough/bitstream) and stereo RCA out. Even if they didn't it's easy to convert digital to analogue with a simple cheap DAC :)
