yep, i've hit that age where nostalgia is kicking in and i can afford to buy into it :D

Bad idea or not? ive got no records myself but my now deceased parents do or did own a substantial record collection that includes the likes of all the Beatles albums and most of the top LP's through the decades of the ones to own so i'd like to put them back into service. And add to that with my own over time.

i guess my question is, is it really worth it?! as much as i do enjoy listening to music im no longer one to stick an album on and listen through it, usually settling on a playlist of multiple artist such as that spotify/youtube now affords us these days. But that scratchy, subtle sound stage of an LP looms.

I think vinyl is good in the sense that you tend to be 'forced' to dedicate yourself to listening to an album properly, rather than todays 'favourites' playlists and ease of skipping tracks, as you say you already have a good collection of albums on vinyl as a starting point then I think it's definitely worth delving into, it's really not that expensive if you already have an amp and speakers, plenty of good starter decks around.

Thanks, yeah thats my thoughts, your more likely to listen to the album in full vs chop and change all the time, theirs something quite luring to just putting on Dark side of the moon (as an example) and just experiencing it.

Any suggestions on a decent turntable?

Rega are always a safe bet, they offer a table for every pocket, the entry level Rega Planer 1 is pretty well regarded, I would stay away from the Plus version though, better to grab an external Phono Preamp if you don't have a moving magnet phono-stage built into your amplifier.

nice one, that looks just the ticket, lost me on the whole magnetic phone-stage :) but guessing my headphone amp that does accept phono input will be more than enough for my needs!

Bad idea or not?

Personally I think bad.
In 1980 when I got married I had 3000+ vinyl albums and slowly gave them all away and the last 200 went about 5 years ago.
I can't imagine going through the trouble of getting an album off a shelf, pulling it out, putting it on a record player and then getting up to skip a track I don't like.
Also unless you've got really good gear you're not going to get the quality of uncompressed files on a proper DAP through £300 triple driver in-ears which is where I'm at now.

I own maybe 250 records, most were picked up in clearance and i'm trying to downsize the collection, I would like that number at least below 70, main reason I get cluttered up with things.

99.9% of time I listen to Amazon Music HD. With a good DAC or even a good sounds card (Asus Essence) high sound quality from streaming is possible.

Owning some cool and valuable albums is ok, for example I have some Beatles and Quincy Jones. However owning hundreds or even thousands of records is nuts, we only have so much space in our houses after all!

So I think it's ok to have a small'ish record collection of records you really want, however as a replacement for streaming it's not.

thanks for the reply's, sorry its been a few days, theirs some good points and i think im gonna sit on this for a while, its purely nostalgia driven so for the sake of my wallet i'm gonna avoid jumping into spending to much on this at the moment! I might just pickup a cheapo player and take it from there.

I started up again 3 years ago. I only had about 30 albums but they have been everywhere with me and not played for over 40 years. I jumped back in and bought a Rega P1 and phono stage and now have just short of 800 albums.

Tbh, if you want to get into physical audio collections.....CDs are crazy cheap at the moment. I have a fairly big vinyl collection but it's very poor value these days. The second-hand CD market is mega cheap, and ticks all the boxes for browsing a physical collection and sticking a full album on!

CDs are crazy cheap at the moment.

The secret to CD's is getting a CD player, or DAC (if your using a CD transport) that has a natural more analogue sound to it. Unfortunately most of todays budget CD's players are not very good.

I lost love with CD's but couple of years ago I changed CD player and reconnected with CD's again.

Still not got any further with this! other hobby's have taken priority, tbh cd's dont really appeal to me though im sure the quality will be much better but that wasn't my goal in this instance. :) give it another 10 years and i might dig the ol collection out of the loft!
