As the title says. My new system is taking a lot longer to boot and shutdown than my old one.

I've done the usual, taking out any services and startup programs that I don't need, but it's still not quick enough for me :p

I've had a quick google around and all I can find is some guides dating back 5+ years, not sure I want to trust them as things may have changed since then!

Might what to check what services are being launched on start up, for example thing like iTunes can load up services which are not needed till you actually use the program. You might also just have a few programs which you don't need booting up at all.

My usual config is to have my anti-virus load, and disable most of the other programs which try to start up when I turn my system on. The only one I allow is Windows Live Messenger as I always use that when ever one my PC so it makes sense to have that run at start up.

To disable start up services type msconfig in the run box and then go to the services tab I think. I can't tell you in detail as its been a while since I've used XP, plus I'm not on a windows machine at the minute.
