I've been thinking about it for a while and am planning on taking up biking at some point in the near future (after I've persuaded the missus as shes dead against it!)

However after reading the DVLA website I've got a bit confused about what tests and things I need to do! I'm 26 (27 in a few weeks) and had a car license since I was 17 from January 01. Do I just need to book up a CBT then do the Direct Access? I've read elsewhere that as I got my license before February 01 I don't need to do a CBT, is this right?

Thanks for any pointers! :)

Thanks for info.. I've had another scout around and came across a handy website with a flow chart of things needed! :)

Might just book my CBT up on the sly so the missus doesn't find out and get that over and done with before finding out about the rest..

Easiest and quickest way (IMO) is get theory done and out the way, then do a DAS course over a few days which includes CBT. Then ride whatever you like.

I've just had a look around and found some places near me that offer courses to do that.. I think this might be the way I end up going, will save messing around and I can just get it all done at once! :)

Spend at least this summer and this winter on a s/h 125 see if you like / can handle it in the freezing rain and slippy manhole covers, drop the 125 a few times, then make your mind up, it could be very costly to do a full test and buy a new bike drop that, to find out it's not for you

I have ridden bikes in the past but not for a long time and I've got my car for the depths of winter! :)

I've found a few places near me that seem recommended so I'm going to phone round them this week and see what I can organise!

She wasn't happy yesterday when she said to me she realised I was serious about doing it now as I was researching it properly and that it wasn't just an idea anymore! :)

Am stopping in at Blueflame exhausts later to do some work for them so will ask them which training centres they recommend around this area, no doubt they'll be desperate to get me on a bike so they can sell me an exhaust like they keep trying to do with my car!

Well I've got my CBT all booked up for next week.. Got home and told the missus and she moaned at me for ruining my birthday surprise! Apparently she was going to book it for me anyway in a few weeks! :)

I've just checked and I should have provisional motorbike entitlement on my license as I got my license before Feb 2001. I just phoned the DVLA and they said I should do as well, however they said it won't say on my plastic card, only on the paper bit which I don't have with me to check!

I think it changed after Feb 2001 and I got mine before that so I was safe and got provisional A included! :)

Its probably a con by the DVLA to get more money by make people have to apply to get provisional motorbike instead of just including it as standard..

Well I'm back from my CBT.. Passed it fine! I was with 3 other people and when it got to the time to go out on the road, I was the only one the instructor wanted to take out, he told the others to come back another day. I was also the only one who didn't fall off! :)
