Well I think its came to the point I'm ready to update my VR headset.. I have the original HTC Vive one which has served me well since it was released. I am at the point where Its too heavy/sweaty and cables everywhere...

I've moved away from playing anything room standing and only play Il2, DCS World or Racing games on a casual basis.

I was looking at upgrading to the Rift S however the Quest 2 appears to succeed this on many levels and can be had for £200 odd pounds on FB market place.

Would it see a benefit to going down this route in terms of gaming experience or should I consider increasing my budget...? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I'd 1 million % go for the Quest 2 over the Rift S even though they're a few extra quid. A HP Reverb G2 is a choice of many simmers too, something to consider, but will be more like £400'ish used.
What is your computer specs?

specs just now is
i7 6700k oc 4.4ghz
32gb 3000mhz
3080ti

cpu/mobo will be upgraded this year to likely 12700k.

I have had a look into the G2, the gains would need to be worth it as being a casual simmer I've learnt to not seek perfection and more just enjoyment from vr

your pc would be ok for any headset, your spec is v similar to mine and mine powers an Aero ok, gpu is what counts most for vr. but a cpu/mobo upgrade won't do any harm, i'm due 1 soon myself.
i've owned a quest 2 and a G2, the G2 does have a noticeably sharper image which is great in sims. but the quest 2 image is still good and it can do wireless. i've had a vive one too and either quest 2 or G2, each 1 is a significant upgrade.

great, thanks for the advice. I will look into both and make the decision. Maybe if I can get a G2 cheap enough and sell my vive for £100 or so it takes the sting out of spending more money than I expected

The best all-round upgrade for a Vive, as you have the base stations is an index and Index (kuckles) controllers.
That is however very expensive, and of course the Index is not as high resolution as newer headsets, though it's a massive leap from the Vive.

The Quest 2 is the best value and can do wireless PCVR, but that does come with the cost of compression artefacts which aren't that noticable most of the time, but it can look pretty bad in some busy or fast paced games.

G2 is great for sims, though the controllers are not as good as the Quest or the Index as they don't have capacitive touch (so no proper hand gestures) and they eat batteries. Also if you get a G2, make sure it's the revised version where the tracking cameras have been repositioned to make controller tracking better. Earlier G2's had massive blind spots where they couldn't detect the controllers.

from what I can understand by your 1st post, you want a wireless solution ?
Quest 2 is what I would go with if you can not wait for Quest 2 pro / Quest 3 / Index 2

you can wirelessly connect your VR headset to your PC without wires (I always play games in this way, Elite, PC2 , After The Fall etc)

Quest 2 is really great for the money. The Reverb G2 is slightly clearer on visuals. Not really because of resolution/pixel density but because it is a direct video link rather than USB/Wireless that introduces compression fuzziness.
If you can get a pulley thing attached to ceiling that holds cable up it’s fine not being wireless IMO…especially for sims stuff

I stopped using controllers a while ago, for my flight sims I had my warthog and pedals.. should I dip my toes back into racing sims again I will likely purchase a steering wheel.

I don't mind being attached to the pc if it will offer a better experience.. the vive one set up is spaghetti junction at the bottom of my desk.. really off putting.
I played IL2 with my friend last night both using outdated VR's for the first time in years and had an utter blast!

Just now I'm in a toss up between the reverb and the quest.. trying to outweigh the cost/visuals/casual experience/fun.

I assume if I go for the quest the 128gb will be fine?

If Sim gaming is your main use of a VR headset then get the Reverb G2. There is no question that it's the better headset for racing and flight sims.

However if you play a variety of game types, then seriously consider getting the Quest 2.

IF you go for the Quest 2, the 128GB model is fine.
