I've had this system for around about 5 years(?) and it's always been at 4.8ghz with a 2600mhz memory overclock, however there's a few games where it is lacking such as Battlefield 2042 and Cyberpunk. So the upgrade itch is getting worse :p

I've been thinking of going second hand and picking up a Ryzon for a change, however are prices likely to come down anytime soon?

I'd get a 12700K or 12700 (locked), both of these handle the most demanding games. Even Battlefield 2042 with 128 players. Worth getting some fast DDR4 or DDR5 too. Might as well wait for Zen3D CPUs to be released now.

Personally I find it a bit of a horrid situation right now. I stuck a Xeon in my ageing X79 in replacement of the 4820K and it did OK for Cyberpunk 2077 with the 3070FE - holds up well against the 10 and 11 series Intel (I've also got a couple of systems using them) at 1440p though around 20% CPU bottlenecked at 1080p. Stuck with this setup for my main system so as to be able to continue running Windows 7 though.

Potentially as a tide over until things improve you can build a pretty decent system without spending too much around a 10400F or 11400F (not overclockable) but it is still a fair bit of money still for something which is an EOL platform now and might not be worth the outlay and effort vs just spending a bit more for something faster.

my 10400f runs bf2042 128 player with no issues seems pretty identical in 32 and 64 player but 32gb helps its using 20gb at times could be a leak

you can pick one up on ebay for around £100+90 ish for a half decent b560 board and ddr4 3200 is dirt cheap or was a few weeks back

not overclockable but you can lock the power limits mines at all core 4ghz which is nice

plan to gift this system to one of the children when I upgrade in a year or two

the upgrade you want is the intel 12 series and wait till after christmas for the budget mobos coming. at the moment there isnt any only 200 quid boards. should be some 100 quid boards then. which makes it far better.

Yes, Alder Lake (the 12th generation) is not good value, unless combined with a cheaper motherboard. I would wait for the B660 motherboards. AMD will have some new CPUs coming too, but these will be limited to using DDR4 RAM.

This is just something that Intel likes to do, unfortunately (apparently, they don't feel under enough pressure from AMD to change). They always release the premium boards first.

Hi DG

I've paid second hand for a 10900K/32GB DDR4 via OCUK forums so I'm hoping that arrives just after Christmas! Should be a good upgrade from my I7, nothing else really took my fancy!
