Looking to upgrade.

ok cool cheers for the advice. any thoughts on getting a sata3 controller for my current board until then or should I just stick with the onboard sata 2 til the ivy bridge?

Just stick with SATA2.

I am still using SATA2 now, with a Crucial C300, and yes it maxes out the speed at 270MB/sec for the interface, its still fast.

Then it may not work with your board as it has a limited compatibility list, although when I saw a review of it in CustomPC mag awhile ago it was tested with a Gigabyte board.
