Looking to upgrade

You'll be upgrading the GPU before the CPU in either case, so if you're happy to pay the premium for the i7, it will still be an awesome upgrade. The GPU is bound to bottleneck first though... so i guess it's a question of do you want to dump that much into the CPU then still budget for a GPU, or make some savings on the CPU to give you more wiggle room on the GPU.

For the most part, the i7 is going to make little difference to games, aside from the few that make use of hyper threading... (games without hyper threading, you'll see absolutely no difference, or it will be unmeasurable to say the least).

Either way, please come back to the forum and show off some pics of your new build when it's all done.. :)

P.S. I use the 140mm Noiseblockers, and i find them to be very good... (when you consider the price compared to other brands)..

I forgot all about this thread, as I was under going Radiotherapy at the time. Anyway an update...

I went with a S/H Asus Maximus VII Hero M/B, 4790K CPU, Noctua NH-U9B SE2 and 8GB Corsair Vengeance Blue Low Profile DDR3 2133 MHz.

Now im looking for a Nvidia GPU and was thinking of a 970 or a 980, it will be used with a single 1080p monitor, although I intend on getting a Swift in the near future.

What would be best with the above spec?

On a side note, I have seen in the GPU section that some people are having problems when installing a 970/980 possibly down to an outdated M/B bios, is this likely to be the case with the Hero?

Probably not, especially if you upgrade to the latest bios before you get the new card. Just download the latest version, put it on a usb stick, reboot, enter the bios and use Ez-Flash to flash the bios.

As simple as following the instructions I posted previously. Just make sure you use Ez-Flash in the bios and not awful windows based flashing software. Do not under any circumstances turn off power while the flash is happening. It should only take 20-30 seconds to complete. When complete it will reboot. You will have to re-enter all your options in the bios afterwards so if you are overclocked write down your settings before you flash.
