Looks like I was scammed

Sorry if i come across a little thick but how do you know if you have signed up for a continues payment agreement for future reference please ? also is credit card the best way to avoid such situations ?

I don't. I was using that as a "what if?" with the bank because they refused to help with this. I asked if what they (the bank) were telling me was true, that would mean any scammer could randomly take continuous payments from an account against the will of the account holder. They said yes, any payment made by debit card gives theoretical continuous authority to the merchant for future use.

To the op sorry for hijack of thread.

regular monthly payments for the same/similar amount. You can also get them on a credit card. The only way not to get them is to make sure you don't sign up for any "****FREE TRIAL SLIMMING PILLS****" or anything else that seems to good to be true that requires your card details.
 
tbh other sites (arguably in good faith), do the same thing with their charge for returns that aren't found to be faulty.

If you agree to a disreputable companies t&c's and hand over your card details you're up the proverbial without a paddle.

v true and the banks have to sit back and let it happen. Was in work today (credit side of a big bank) and I spoke a head of the section on the exact same subject who used the term 'nasty little $%£^%$^%$^%' to describe one of these companies.

The only T&C I agreed to were to (1) pay in order to (2) receive goods. I completed (1) in good faith, the rest didn't materialise.
 
No that sound sabout right, I had a very similar problem with Halifax, well, same problem really, only difference is I was out 60 pounds not just 10 and they said the same thing.

Banks love the public only to bail them out.

According to the BBC site (Dom's blog) you posted earlier, banks "have to" get involved if the merchant stops delivering the product / goods. That seems to apply here?

Yep, it's horrendous. Most people would very quickly loose faith in the debit card system if they knew what companies could legally get away with.
 
The Fraud team won't do anything as you given them your card details ( I know it's stupid), you are allowed to claim back the 10 pounds thou but only 30 days after the transaction they will open a dispute and try and get the money back for you.
 
Yes, but until the customer notices, takes action and get's no where. It's only then that they will step in.

Thanks for all the input guys. I "tricked" my way back into live help under a false name (they won't accept support calls from anyone using my real name)... My first words involved having already reported them to my bank's fraud team, so I suggest they stay and listen... They did...

Eventually they said they were processing a refund and left the chat. We'll see, but I wont hold my breath. As Stretch said, this has totally removed my confidence in the banking industry and debit card system. I'll be paying cash only from now on, and any necessary card payments will be going through a pre-paid creit card with a zero pre-existing balance, and/or PayPal who basically side with the buyer regardless.

What a crock. BTW this thread is one of the first results for digicallingcards.com 's name/number on Google now. That'll learn 'em. :p
 
Steps to resolve this
- Cancel card right away
- Write the letter to your bank explaining what happened
- Receive charge back
- Lesson learnt

It's not difficult.

Way to read the thread. My bank have already informed me that they are not willing to cancel my card, and have left notes on the system reflecting that. They have also stated they are unlikely to consider a refund as they won't charge back on "willing transactions" regardless of "non-bank" fraud taking place.
 
Just phone and say you left your card in a taxi, they'll cancel it. How can they prove you haven't lost your card?

If the transation is fraudulent they will chargeback. You just have to kick up a little fuss.

As for the rest, yes I fail at reading threads. :( :o

Nope, I'd already logged in once to make the payment, and afterwards to check it. It said Pending then booted me out, and wouldn't let me log back in. :\ I'll speak to the bank tomorrow to complain, wait three days to see what happens (i.e. if the late promise of a refund before the woman disconnected the chat on me turns up). Either way that account's getting closed and I'm sticking to cash in future.
