Looks like xbox 360 may be showing it's limitations

Last I heard the premium was outselling the core 2:1, off course lots of cores will not have added the HDD, releasing a game like GTA needing the HDD would be ideal really, how much space on the HDD would the game need? how about even the game and 5gig HDD bundle for an extra £20 :D

Academic though innit. Devs have to code for the lowest common denominator which is the Core.
Which is why Microsoft are replacing the Core with the Premium and bumping the Elite up to the top model.

Since when? Microsoft have officially stated that the Elite is a third SKU not a replacement for anything. The lowest common denominator is still HDD less.

The precedence has already been set, developers do not have to code for a system without a HDD if they don't want to..

So what are you lot on about?

Its not really a limitation as on any cross-platform project you nearly always aim at the lost common platform and make it run fine on there.. and add a few tweaks for the more others to help improve loading times and texture resolutions..

Its my experience that the 360 is stil lthe more powerful off the 2 for raw GPU processing and VRAM.. CPU PPS3 wins.. but there is little in it either way..

HOWEVER the PS3 has 1 major flaw.. Sony have limited its FPS to sync in sets of 10. So if a game runs on the verge of 30FPS as most do currently.. should that a game start to struggle it will not drop 1 ~3 frames.. it drops down to 20 FPS instead..

Where as the 360 will simply drop frames 1 at a time..

This is a bit of bad decision on Sony's part.. Although not now as games get pushed more and more these drops to 20FPS will be more and more noticible.

You need to remember however, rockstar used the same engine (slightly modified each time) to make GTA III through to San andreas, this is a whole new engine. Comparing the size of the original engine is probably a fruitless venture.
Engines are not what takes up most of the space, as it's mostly just code. It's the artwork and audio that take up the space. If you recreated GTA3 on the new engine using the existing artwork it probably wouldn't be much bigger than the original.

I knew this sort of thing would happen. Shame on MS for making the 360 less well specced than its predecessor  Consoles should only ever have one version and for this generation they should all have a hard drive as standard - christ it isn't as if they are expensive nowadays.
Yeah what a nightmare, I got my core free with a £30 a month mobile phone contract 6 months ago - don't see PS3's becoming available like that on contracts that cheap! Gotta be happy with a Premium for ~£100 :)

Personally I fancy waiting till it comes out before proclaiming judgement either way!

*edit* LOL feels like a year, 6 months!

Even if they did put it on 3 discs on the 360 is it some kind of massive problem like some people seem to think it is? There were plenty of 2 disc games on the gamecube, thanks to the consoles quick load times it wasn't an annoyance and it wasn't like you had to swap the disc every 2 minutes.

The 360 also has a pretty quick load time, something the ps3 obviously doesn't, if you had to swap discs when changing to the second part of the city more than likely you could swap out the disc and have the city loaded before the ps3 could have it loaded in.

news to me, do you have any proof of this?

Take a squint at this vid comparing the same game on both consoles in terms of loading times.

Doesn't mean to say that it will be the case in gta but its obvious that the ps3 is fairly sluggish in load times, just look at motorstorm and how long something as simple as selecting a car\selecting a skin takes with the mad load times, and thats a game developed specifically for the ps3.

Thats why im 99% sure GTA4 on the PS3 will install to your Hard drive ala oblivion. If they wasn't thinking about using the Hard disk then they wouldn't mention it as an issue for the 360 version.

well , i was waiting for someone to say it, should you need to, theres a way to double the capacity a game can use, yes, a 2nd freaking dvd :o

anyway, at the moment a lot, and that means almost all games use a lot of empty space basically, to try an make copying the games harder, considering people can and do copy them anyway and it makes not the slightest bit of difference obviously theres space there.

2nd the engine, textures only take up so much space, the video takes up a heck of a lot more, now, almost garenteed the game engine can fit on one disc with masses of space left, the problem is, if the case is with video it won't fit on one disc, that you will have loading issues if you had to swap discs a lot which is far , very far from ideal. while switching dvd's wouldn't be an issue in say GOW, or most games, things in a large singular world where you can choose where to go at any one time will indeed have issues. but there could be easy ways around that. there is some kinda linear story going on in things like GTA, and games like it. you could have 3/4 dvd's with much of the content identical, but most of the big video's will often happen in a known sequence, you can't do some missions before others, the general central plot tends to be linear even if you can choose to do other stuff between it. you could simple have the main plot video split on 2/3 dvd's with everything else the same, which would only mean 2/3 disc changes throughout the game, that wouldn't be at all a big deal. or for hard drive owners the option to put all video/audio onto the hdd first then play from one dvd. they've maybe wanted to do a lot of soundtracks for more radiostations in the game and lots of things they can get around.

but also, as someone pointed out, it doesn't mean its more limited than a PS3 or less limited, everything has limitations. both the ps3/xbox360 are already way way behind in graphical power compared to pc's(though theres yet to games to really use it), so they are both already limited in what they can do graphically. pc's are limited in high end graphical games because most games have to still run on 7300gtpoo cards aswell.

so the ps3 has slower load times on some games, look i've saved 15secs wait time, big deal, at least i'll be able to hear what they are saying in game instead of the jet engine trying to take off next to my TV.

See i can slate the 360 also, and i own both, next you'll be saying i'll just turn the sound up or wear headphones
