My PC has started taking ages to boot up. It used to be about 2 mins from hitting the switch to opening spamkiller to look at my mail. It is now over double that. I don't see any more processes running than usual and event viewer dosen't show any problems.
Only stuff I have changed lately is updating a few drivers, X-Fi, Nforce and display.

After login. It just seems to take forever to load. Mcafee spamkiller is the last thing to start up so I know it's done when that pops up. The hard drive just seems to chunter away for ages. It's probably related but sometimes shutdown takes an age too. It'll sit there like it's thinking about it for a minute or so before it logs off n shuts down. SOMETHING is running or clogging it up but I have no idea what.

Sounds like vista, in which case you'd better just get used to it. If it isn't vista we need more details.

What AV are you running? Mcafee has set alarm bells ringing, awful software.

It's still on XP. It used to boot fine until recently. Apar from updating a couple of drivers not much has changed. I was careful to install only Spamkiller as I know what resource hog Mcafee is. My AV is Avast which works fine.

If I were you I would get rid of Mcafee and avast and get NOD32 and just use windows firewall. Just run all the MS updates via the update button. Run CCleaner and Spybot search and destroy

Then run Diskeeper and set to automatic mode

agree, its over kill.

can you take a screen shot of MSCONFIG start up? would like to see what you have loading, as its properly a combo of naff that is causing the issues

U only really need to run something like diskeeper and nod32 and windows firewall all the time. This is after you have cleaned with something like hijackthis, ccleaner, spybot and lavasoft.

As long as you dont browse korean rape porn or cracks websites then you will be fine!
