The Girlfriends Ford KA Overheated a week ago while going through the Tyne Tunnel. She had been sitting is very slow moving traffic for 45 mins and it was Very hot day so I didn't think much about it, I topped the coolant up (was about an inch under the mininum) and all was OK.

However, I checked her car again last night and the coolant was low again, about the same level as before. Checked under the car for anything but there are no signs of a leak. I know it's only lost a small amount (maybe 3 inches from the header tank) but is it something to worry about? Could it be the first signs of a HGF?

Thanks

Si

Checl the oil dipstick for water contamination.

Check theres no water dripping from the oil sump tank.

Check for excessive smoke from the exhaust when you rev it, also water may be present.

Owning a Rover made me an expert on HGF's  :D

the initial loss (and over heating) may have made the coolant drop a lot lower than you thought, hence topping up filled the header but didnt take into account the typical air lock

id top it up again and then keep a close eye on it.

check for oil and water mixing (everything sounds like head gasket issues to this board lol) or alternatively check for a weepy thermostat housing

I've given the car the once over and I don't think it's the gasket, Oil is clean, no Mayo in sight. I think It's probably just mild paranoia (that's what happens when you own a Lotus.. everything makes you think it's the gasket)
