Looting! Well thats what it is. :(

An ID system would be nice (we already have the workings of one, ultimately it will happen), unfortunately ruined by the cataclysmic nature of British book keeping and certainly the current May-driven authoritarianism. But whatever.

I'm just saying that in a society that expects some level of competence on government, local or national, that having an up to date list of who's who in their jurisdiction shouldn't be impossible when you rely on it to give out benefits/bills/other correspondence from the state.

No that doesn't mean that people should be turned out onto the street either, it became a different discussion however when the government shook the money tree for the fire-struck (rightly so), where legality of residents becomes questionable and unfortunately/fortunately important.

Regardless this thread is clearly fluff (foreigner steals from government/grenfell residents) that needn't be detached from the main thread.

Why would i tell them what?

Their names should be on Management companies records and at least the council billing system... how is it so difficult to just ask for a name (and perhaps address) to confirm?

They're probably doing it now, as there's no other way to identify them without it being a particularly long cross-matching of information for little gain.

But the illegal immigrants subletting will not be on management records

exactly, other than having a crystal ball they're not necessarily going to know even if such a system has been set up

sad thing is there might well be people who were there unofficially who won't have received any help because they're too afraid of being caught or don't speak the language, the other worry is that someone who was only there on paper (as an official tenant) but has given up their flat to be illegally sublet to such people could do as this guy in the OP has done and claim to be a victim (and indeed bag a new flat)
