An ID system would be nice (we already have the workings of one, ultimately it will happen), unfortunately ruined by the cataclysmic nature of British book keeping and certainly the current May-driven authoritarianism. But whatever.
I'm just saying that in a society that expects some level of competence on government, local or national, that having an up to date list of who's who in their jurisdiction shouldn't be impossible when you rely on it to give out benefits/bills/other correspondence from the state.
No that doesn't mean that people should be turned out onto the street either, it became a different discussion however when the government shook the money tree for the fire-struck (rightly so), where legality of residents becomes questionable and unfortunately/fortunately important.
Regardless this thread is clearly fluff (foreigner steals from government/grenfell residents) that needn't be detached from the main thread.
