Lorries - Hitting Low Bridges

What, you mean like road signs indicating the maximum vehicle height, before getting to the bridge? It sure would be nice if those existed. :p

Nope, I mean like modern speed limit warnings that you find on everyday cars that give you an audible warning. Speed limit signs exist, how many of us have points for speeding. The stakes are raised slightly when you close a railway bridge for hours in a busy area after you didn't read the height. :p

Exactly, that's why some go hitting into the bridge and some don't.

I deal with drivers on a regular basis to and opposite our office is also a 4m bridge which has drivers causing mayhem once a month. 50:50 UK to foreign. Foreign I can forgive, the UK drivers no chance.

Don't they have bridges then? what's to forgive? :p

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was, somewhat facetiously, trying to make the point that all the information about what's ahead already exists and is displayed fairly prominently on road signs.

Also, my car doesn't warn me about speed limits. My car is nearly as old as I am. :D

You mean signs like in the US :P

Problem solved.

Something like that with a simple tilt switch that activates flashing warning lights on the bridge itself. If you still manage to hit it, then there should be a team of people standing by to drag you from your stricken vehicle and smack you repeatedly in the face and tear up your licence for being such a numpty

Price it all up and get it installed.

Half the problem is many of our rural roads are in now way suitable for lorries, but they'll continue to drive down them. (Most because part of the time, they have no choice).

Down in Kent, there's a low bridge that would get hit by lorries and buses alike, but no manner or warnings will stop that.

Would it not come under?

CD10 Driving without due care and attention - 3 to 9 points
CD20 Driving without reasonable consideration for other road users - 3 to 9 points
CD30 Driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users 3 to 9 - points

I live in Grantham.

The answer is stupid people.

The bridges are all clearly marked miles out. Stupid people still drive on through them and ignore them.

I wonder if the sort of technology that is used in radar guided cruise control and reverse parking sensors etc could be adapted to detect a potential bridge strike.

This.

I'm an HGV driver and have no issue negotiating or avoiding towns with low bridges (touch wood!!) - all are clearly signed and height marked, all hgv's have a vertical height indicator in the cab that by law has to be set to the vehicles travelling height.

If you don't know your trucks height, miss the signs and ignore what's infront of your eyes and still manage to hit a low bridge, you shouldn't be driving a truck!

As a truck driver do you know/know of anyone who has been in such a predicament? If so does your insurance cover the damage to the bridge?
