Lagarith in YV12 or YUY2 mode. RGB takes up far too much space.
Very good quality, very low CPU impact and very reasonable file sizes.
I use YV12 mode personally with Dxtory. Can play BF3 in 1920x1200 and record at 100% with zero impact on gameplay.

I was playing around with Lagarith seems good but the file produced isn't compatible with Handbrake. Yeah Dxtory is cool much better than Fraps and its stupid 4GB limit.
Ive settled on HuffYUV in FFDShow.
Ive never understood what YV12 / YUY2 / RGB meant in regards to recording.

RGG YUY etc are colour spaces. RGB is larger (more colours) and results in larger file sizes. When it comes to actual viewing though there would be no discernible loss in perceived colour range by recording in YV/YUY instead of RGB.
Lagarith is not the best for editing, admittedly. It's more of an archive format. Premier, Vegas etc can all read it though. VLC cannot play it properly it for example but Media Player can.
Are you sure Handbrake cannot use it? I record in YV12 and Vidcoder can open and encode it perfectly (Vidcoder is basically a nicer front end of Handbrake)

Wow took them long enough.
I love Dxtory too much to go back to Fraps now.

Yeah Dxtory is light years ahead of Fraps.
Full control over codec, capture sizes, multiple audio sources (manually defined and as many as you want) and the best part of all, profiles for each game exe/process so you can store captures in specific folders or with different settings.

Yeah I tried it.. Handbrake just keeps scanning and cant find anything..
have a go yourself see if it picks it your lagarith source : http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
I found another good codec but its slow on my PC.... "FFV1". I only get 20fps encoding.
