Evening gents,

So I've had my 2700x / 1080ti setup for a while now and my ancient viewsonic monitor is starting to flicker and could do with replacing.

However I am completely baffled by all the options there are these days!

Ideally I am looking for something 24-27inch but no bigger and happy to spend anywhere between 300-450ish, but that's the easy bit!

Now from what I've read i should be looking at a minimum of 144hz but I have no idea if g-sync is worth shelling out for? There's also adaptive sync but I believe this is actually amds freesync so will not work with the 1080ti.

Also 4k vs 1080p? Having only ever used 1080 is 4k worth sticking at 60hz for the size I am looking at?

Any help, advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Unless you want to use scaling (you don't) then you want a certain number of pixels per inch, otherwise text will be too small to read. 1080p is good for 24 inch, 1440p is good for 27 inch. I'd recommend 1440p 27 inch.

Traditionally, refresh rate is 60hz. There are monitors with higher refresh rates, 144Hz is common, and that can make a big difference in competitive games where your gpu can actually deliver 144 fps - e.g. Counter Strike. If you play something slower like EVE Online, or WOW, then it's not a big deal.

GSync is an nvidia board in a monitor that lets the GPU tell the monitor when to refresh, which eliminates tearing and stuttering. I don't have it, but everyone who gets it says they wouldn't go without it, so I guess it must be good. It requires an Nvidia GPU, which you have.

FreeSync is AMD's version of GSync. At CES a few days ago Nvidia announced they were going to support 12 of those models in a future driver update.

There has been quite a panel lottery in recent years, folks buy monitors and find there's loads of backlight bleed, and various other quality control issues. So I'm gonna recommend a monitor to you on the basis that I've had a few and they've all been perfect - (1440p 27" 60hz IPS) Dell U2715H (google it).

Thanks for the replies guys, sounds like 1440p is worth going for over 1080p then.

I will have a look at G-sync but this does seem to boost the price quite a bit, interesting to read that a few of the freesync monitors will work with Nvidia going forward. I think i would like to look for a 144hz if possible to make the most of the 1080ti!

I do like the look of Asus monitors but I am not sure if you are just paying for the name.

The Asus GSync monitors are some of the better ones. But yeah they are pricey.
IPS: PG279Q
TN: PG278QR

That certainly looks to fit the bill quite well, and with £70 off that is a great deal atm...

I always give myself a budget in these threads and very quickly start aiming higher lol

*** Scuse the ignorance though, whats IPS and TN? (whoops google search!)

  • IPS: Best all-rounder for colours and viewing angles; there are some very high-refresh-rate panels coming onto the market
  • VA: Poorer response times than IPS and TN, but very deep blacks and great viewing angles
  • TN: The fastest, but normally with poorer viewing angles but higher refresh rates
I don't think viewing angle is such a problem as I am at a desk so will always be viewing straight on!

Another silly question, I am guessing HDMI 1.4 is the best way to connect to my 1080ti? Sounds like you don't need 2.0+ unless using 4k?

Not sure what DisplayPort v1.2 is lol

Thanks for your help guys, just ordered the pg278qr and a display port cable.

Slightly more than I originally budgeted but may as well get the most out of my 1080ti!

You sure the monitor doesn't already come with a display port cable?

That monitor has a DisplayPort cable in the box, if possible save some money and cancel the cable order.

DP has various revisions, just like HDMI, but VESA don't want the revision number labelled against DP cables. This is mostly a bad idea imo because not all cables are equal, for example the first two DP revisions don't support 1440p above 75Hz, for 1440p at 144Hz you need a DP 1.2 or 1.2a cable, or an even higher revision than that.

The OcUK branded DP cables are 1.0 or 1.1a and won't unlock the full potential of your monitor. Hope this isn't the cable you ordered.

About your monitor... nice ;) I bought it last year on Black Friday. Your gunna love it.

Ah thanks for the info guys, was only the cheap 1m cable so not too worried.

I did check but couldn't find any info on what comes in the box, will the one it comes with be a 1.2?

Many thanks I am looking forward to unlocking some more potential out of the 1080ti!

It will be 1.2 or higher, it's enough to run 1440p at 165Hz :)

I have read about some backlight bleed issues on the ips pg279q but not finding many issues listed with the pg278qr...

Needless to say I will be giving it a good once over and checking I am happy with the panel quality. Only thing I have read is that the stock settings on this tn monitor could do with some changes but once changed they are suppose to be very good.

Well I got mine an older model and B Grade for around £360 ( I think ) and its been pretty good , it seems not to like having things in it via USB though it fickers on and off , they are nice though, but pricey .

Got the monitor yet?

Hi there,

Yes thanks I got it over the weekend, was slightly disappointed when it came to setup as it unfortunately came with a 2 pin european plug rather than the 3 pin uk plug (I blame brexit lol). Guys at OCUK were quick to get the correct lead sent out though and managed to get by with an adapter over the weekend.

I really like the screen, going from 60hz to 165hz and gsync has moved the bar on quite a bit for what I am aiming for but its amazing at how much smoother things are now. Getting anywhere between 60-140 fps in most games, graphics settings depending. No tearing at all and have not really noticed any stutter whilst gaming other than very slight whilst in Heaven benchmark.

I do have a very small amount of backlight bleed in the bottom right (mainly caused by the power led im sure) and bottom left but for me it's nowhere near bad enough for to be concerned, I can never notice it unless on a completely black screen as you are very rarely gaming and looking into the corners.

Overall very happy with it and can't believe I've been using my old monitor for so long now!

Getting an IPS panel with no backlight bleed at all is like winning the lottery.

Now can OCUK leak some details about the new ROG Swift line up, we all know there's a reason you put the entire range at a discount except the new 4K display :p
