Lost ITV1 HD

STV HD has been on the satellite since 2010 as I tuned it manually to watch the world cup in HD, but it's never been added to any guides until recently.

huh? Are you in Ireland? I have SD ITV and HD and SD STV through sky here in Glasgow

No.

Sky have gotten rid of the manual way of accessing STV HD.

For a long time now. Plus everyone commented on how poor STV HD was compared to ITV HD.

So now I have SD STV and SD ITV.

I have now though managed to manually add HD UTV (irish version of ITV/STV).

So i'm in scotland and cannot get STV in HD or ITV in HD but I have now manually added UTV in HD.

I did use to have STV in HD through manually adding it.

Hence you have the same problem as the rest of us.

Seems like a lot of jumping through hoops for nothing

Has to be done though. Unless one enjoys the butchered SD blurry quality watching football. However, it's shocking it's taken until 2014 for STV HD. Seriously, it's 2014.

Agreed. I don't even pay attention to the SD channels on Sky, aside from Comedy Central Extra which has The Daily Show; the rest just don't exist as far as I'm concerned. If I'm ever browsing the guide it's always on the HD channels.

ITV probably ****ed them over as it was around the time STV refused to pay into a lot of the ITV programming syndication deals.

Probably for the same reason it hasn't changed today. Different regions. Remember the days going on holiday, caravan parks and such having to tune in your SDTV to pick up Grampian.

in the past regions used to be far apart, today in the modern world with advances in technology, transport, etc this is no longer the case.

i don't particularly care about getting programming for my specific region because it's so small and the majority of it is so poor i'd rather all the money being put into 1 big pot and used efficiently rather than being spread into several smaller pots.

stuff like scottish weather and scottish news can be covered as part of UK news and weather. If I want more then I can use the internet or buy a newspaper, etc.

the separate channel system needs to be scrapped and just turned into UKTV, that way they shall save millions in wages, have 1 channel for all and provide a much better service IMO.

if they wanted they could always localise just the news, weather and adverts and keep all other programmes the same.

i hate their being football on ITV but not on STV, etc. Means I then need to watch it in SD.

That's rather narrow-minded. There's clearly an audience for localised programming, it's not just news and weather. It's also part of their remit. Scotland wants to see more Scottish programmes than the rest of the UK does so they need to be able to cater to that. Similarly for Welsh programmes, NI etc.

Hell, in places like Canada and the US you have city-specific TV channels so I don't see why a channel covering an entire region is an issue.

the audience isn't large enough IMO to justify them.

probably large enough in a city like London.

i don't know anyone who watches crap like river city for example.

What's to justify? The BBC has a remit to provide regional programming, and evidently there's a good business case for the 'independent' broadcasters to do it otherwise they wouldn't.

Centralising everything in the way you've suggested ultimately means that the London view comes to dominate. That's not something I want, thank you very much.

Some of the regional programme commissioning might be of questionable quality, but then so too are many of the nationally commissioned programmes.
