Lost my XP activation key...

Well, not lost so much as 'missus put my activation mey in the bin' :rolleyes:

as it was nicely tucked in an envelope for safe keeping.

Now, how do I go about getting it re-issued - I've paid for the software and don't see that I should have to buy it again.

I'm not up to date on the whole Windows activation system, but I assume a program like the Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder will be able to dig the required information up from the registry?

Note it down and keep it in a safe place

Yep, if it's installed you'll be able to get the key like that. If not, then in theory you might be able to contact someone for a replacement key, but I wouldn't count on it. You don't expect to buy a DVD, lose it and get a replacement for free, no reason why you should expect the same here.

Total different situation - I have the CD, just not a scratty little sticker, stuck to some cellophane.

I think if you phone up microsoft on their toll free number, they can also give you a replacement key by running the activation section again and reading your activation code out. They probably then disable your existing key to cover their backs re: piracy etc.
