LOTR Blu-ray?

The rumour that holds the most water is that they will be released on BR just prior to the release of The Hobbit in the cinema.
Get the interest in the whole storyline back so they take plenty at the box office.

LOL@Pirating things that don't exist.

Oh and in answer to the statement:
And they wonder why people pirate

A - Because they are lazy, bone idle thieves who feel the world owes them a living.

I thought they were supposed to be out end of this year just not the extended cuts....which are being held back until after the release of the Hobbit?

You can download the 1080p triology on bittorrent.

Or because what they want is unavailable through legal means...

Can't you just wait till it comes out on BluRay? Will be in better quality than the download - you must have the DVDs, it's hardly like you can't watch them at all till the BluRay editions are out.

Ofc I'll buy it when it comes out, I have the dvd's but I want a hd version now! This incident just demonstrates the industries inability to give the customer what they want.

You can't just instantly release every catalogue title available on DVD on BR.....have patience! People have a problem with waiting for stuff these days.

True, but it's not that it's taking time to scan the masters to blu-ray, it's that they are deliberately withholding the release as part of a marketing plan.

It's very irritating when a lot of fans would buy the films on Blu-ray right now anyway - maybe Jackson could do a 'Special Edition' a la Star Wars for when the Hobbit movie finally appears?

Instantly? Blu-ray has been around how long now?

Well, quite a chunk of BluRay is actually upscaled DVD files so it doesn't take anywhere near as long to produce and isn't totally HD.

I can imagine that LOTR would be the type of HD release where they go back to the film and scan it at 1080P or 4K for ultimate quality - that takes a LONG time.

There was a thread about this a while back.

Since when?

That doesn't make sense, you would transfer film to digital at full 4k resolution to create the digital master and then reduce the resolution later, you would not scan and edit the film at a low resolution as that would result in artifacts.
