LOTRO to go 'free to play' in the autumn....

not another free 2 play attempt, games tend to go downhill when they switch to this....

I doubt it, a lot of people want MMO's to be free to play, especially with things like Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game. Once the game is purchased, it should be free to play and you use the store that they provide to by things on your own grounds.

Might explain the reason why DirectX 11 hasn't been released for LoTRO.

I think this is a good step, i believe all MMO's should be free to play and that you purchase content on your own basis.

DX11 is in the book release due to the same time it goes free to play.

I suspect the game's development has paid for itself and subscribers are dwindling hence the change.

The change is almost certainly due to the success of D&D Online, which was a hair's breath from dying when they introduced a particularly clever free to play model. It's absolutely jam packed now, and it's very, very good at getting you to spend money on it.

Lotro is going to absolutely explode when they introduce this.

It sounds like the F2P has been well thought out with LOTRO but it could be the death of the RP servers. If they pull it off aswell as Guildwars with their F2P then it could give it a good boost.

Does this mean they will not go all the way to Mordor like they wanted? :(

They said you can purchase expansions with points, so they will be releasing more expansions and if they don't, then the money put into LoTRO is a waste.

Keep in mind, they've only recently released Mirkwood, and i think they release an expansion out every year and rumour says Rohan is out later this year.

Honestly, will some of you close minded people please open your eyes and realise there is a HUGE difference between the sort of F2P you see in some games designed from the ground floor up with F2P, especially Korean ones, and Western F2P systems like this.

The lowest common denominator MMO Gamer comments I can understand but im sick of people saying they will quit the game because they dont to be behind people gear wise who can afford to buy all of the best stuff on the store. It's VERY tiring having to explain it every single time how they are making their money on this model by taking things out the game for F2P users and then selling them back to you, or you can subscribe and keep absolutely everything you currently have.

This is going F2P?! Prepare to have the kids ******** all over your community. High end players must be gutted.

I do feel somewhat for Laurelin. The community there (one of the best I've experienced in an MMO), could take a big hit if Codemasters arent very strong with it.

F2P itself isnt too bad to be honest, essentially the only quests in F2P are upto Bree-land so only really up to the mid 20s. To get higher than that its either going to be grinding mobs (which currently give very low xp compared to questing) or paying for additional "quest packs" to level on.

Wouldn't this be likely to increase botters / Chinese gold farmers as well?

Not really. Free accounts are very limited, 2g at once is pretty much nothing, even at level 45 I've got 30g without much effort, gave away all my materials to the Kin (well, Deadbeat)

Rohan would be cool, imagine a battle of helms deep style scenario. :)

Helms Deep instance would be pretty cool, especially if you were to fight alongside the characters from the books. Perhaps your fellowship could be a part of the group that escorts the civilians away during the battle?

Free players have a cap on messages and IM's. I think they can only send a tell once every 5-10 seconds and can only put out so many chat messages per minute.

High end players got nothing to worry about cos to get to moria/mirkwood takes time and money, genuine new players will have to put up with kids/trolls in low level areas and that might put some of them off from playing.
RP servers might suffer for some time but I can't see people hanging around for long if they're only interested in trolling.

I can't see mods being too friendly with people messing about on the RP servers. Would be a good idea to perhaps allow F2P people on the non-rp servers, and when they sub or go Premium they get access to them.

the game wont change much at all, sure there will be an influx of players who want to test the game and that can only be a good thing. Some, if they like it will subscribe so they can get more content others might take up a full lifetime offer. Starter area's will have more players meaning grouping (albeit not necessary) will be more common which for new players helps the overall experience.

Regarding RP servers like Laurelin, global LFF/OOC are full of non RP'ers and you get the usual idiot conversations already so I dont expect that side to get any worse than what it already is. There was however an event last night by 'The Shades' which went well with no idiots to ruin it, obviously things like this are open to free-players a$$ing about...
