LoTRO...worth it?

From their FAQ:
I heard that LOTRO had great graphics. Why does the trial look worse than the screenshots on your site?
LOTRO does have great graphics on most systems – they just take a while to download. To get you into the game more quickly, initial areas (character generation and the tutorial instances) are displayed with lower-resolution textures and less detail. However, once the complete game has downloaded (the full 12GB, not just the first segments) you will be able to adjust your graphics settings higher.
I guess that explains it. Although I did download the 10gb HD version.

Too bad you missed the £75 lifetime offer that ended a few days ago.

If I had missed it, I would have been beyond upset and dismayed and would probably want to cry.

It's a great game from what I played. Looks gorgeous as well, think I've got the Original game + Mines of Moria but not the newest expansion.

I only played till about level 35 last year and then quit to try out some other MMO's (Aion, EVE) Aion was too grindy and EVE was good but the sandbox element meant I had to use my brain too much (not a good idea). So I'm thinking of going back to the Lotro as I found it pretty easy going and a good community.

So will my level 35 character be free to play? Or do I need to make a new toon?

Bought 2 copies (don't ask) of this at launch and never had the time to get into it. Might install the client again and give it as whirl as it's going F2P though... dread to think how much patching will be needing from bog-standard retail though.

Now that seems like a really dumb idea to me. I wonder how many people have taken one look and went "crap, I'm not playing that, it looks awful".

If it's going F2P then what would the point of buying a lifetime sub be?

Free to play is a bit of a misleading term. Without subbing or paying singly for stuff, you won't be able to take on quests after a certain area, so you'll basically have to grind monsters to level 50.

People with lifetime subs will basically have permanent access to everything. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the general gist.

i'm fairly gutted as I just realised i've downloaded 9GB of the american version, rather than the EU version...

2GB left! (would have been sooner if not for Virgin's throttling ¬¬)

EDIT: and installing now =D see you all online!

Well, they copied the idea from WoW and it doesn't seem to have hurt them. Last time I used a free 10 day comeback to WoW time and dl'd the client it can have you playing very quickly but does the same things, crap looks, area's not available yet aswell I think though never end up using the time for long or going very far.

Then again, once you whack WoW up to full settings, it still looks like crap :p

I'm playing Wow again at the moment, at max settings for everything, high res, high AA, frankly it looks awful, some of it is nice design which is half the battle, but the awful tree/leave textures, path, grass, etc, its soo soo dated now its a bit of a joke.

Lotro, at near to lowest settings looks better than WoW on top settings. Wow highest vs Lotro highest is no contest, Lotro, not particularly surprisingly, looks like a game thats 5 years ahead of it in tech/quality, though its only a few years younger than WoW.

Of all the WoW-clones and wannabes, LOTRO was the one that came the closest to pulling me away from Blizzard's great behemoth.

I just... it just didn't immerse me like WoW does. Maybe it was because I only gave it the trial length (10 days) or because whenever I grouped for a quest, nobody ever explained what they were doing and just ran off ahead killing.

I just couldn't put my finger on it. I'd recommend giving it a go on the trial though.

for some reason even the elvish starting area looks brilliant, and if these are bad quality areas I can't wait to see the rest. I'm playing at 1920x1080 all settings maxed w/ the v. high textures.

Is there a dx11 version of this ? Dl now I have a level 80 in wow but I am so bored of wow now it's all about gear score etc to much people gold buying etc and getting gear Far to easily now in wow I hope this is better what Race /profession would you recommend in this ? Thanks

The DX11 client is due out later this year.

All the races/classes/professions are viable imo. The Explorer profession is a popular choice as that gives you Prospecting and Forestry (along with Tailoring), which will enable you to mine ore and chop wood, both of which tend to sell fairly well. Doesnt give you much of an actual craft skill though if you're aiming for that, but its a very good resource gathering profession for making coin.

Certainly, imo, the areas look better and better the further you go (as you would expect of course as newer areas make use of advancements in design and graphics)

can't add any more to those above, but will add its a great game and you should be playing it :)

alright im a level 7 minstrel on Laurelin, name Minato.

I've never actually played a healer before in any game, so I thought i'd try it out this time around. Normally I go for the sorcerer/mage type class, then when I get 1 shotted by things, give up and roll with a more durable ranger type.

Aaanyways, yeah, healer. Should be fun (or insanely boring, can't tell yet :P)
