Hi guys,

Finally got the internet up and running after 3 months in the new house! Huzzah (or so I thought)

I am getting a huge amount of lag when I have logged on to play BC2 tonight on any server?

I am getting good download speeds, and have decent wireless signal, but still...lag lag lag lag...

Any ideas what this could be>

If it helps I am running a sweex LW13 Wireless 300n PCI Card and the new Sky D-Link Router.

Cheers guys!

are you in the first 10 days still?

I thought that it was 8 days Beerbaron but i maybe wrong.

If you in the 8-10 days bracket still of 1st getting your connection then your
internet will fluctuate in speed and quality as for this period the line is being
tested to see exactly what speed you will get, ISP should have advised you of this
when you were being setup.

Instead of ping, do a traceroute. This will show each hop and give you a clue as to where the lag is coming from (only a clue as some routes will be circular, and you dont get to see every hop in that case).

If the first hop (your own router) is more than 1ms, or if it spikes badly then you may prefer to try a wired connection.

If your sharing the connection with other family members that can increase ping times depending on what they are doing.

Finally, if you want to improve "in game" ping response time, and gameplay, you can change how windows manages TCP acknowledges. Normally windows will save up a couple of acks, and send a single reply. This is great for big file downloads, as it saves a tiny bit of bandwidth, and makes more efficient use of your processor and network card etc.

However, gaming isnt about large amounts of data, its about hundreds of very small datapackets. By altering windows TcpAckFrequency (google it), you can literally half your ping times in games such as World of Warcraft / Everquest, or just about any first person shooter.

Tweaking TcpAckFrequency will improve gaming on windows XP, Vista and even Windows 7, but it does envolve editing the registry :/

Ooh, something important that I forgot. If your phoneline isnt that great, during the stabilization phase, sometimes "interleave" mode will be enabled. This mode allows higher average connection speeds, and helps prevent data errors, BUT its an absolute killer when it comes to ping performance and gaming latency.

My own connection I am getting 21ms pings from the pingtest.net, with a 1ms jitter, thats with a sync rate of 8128 (bras profile 7150), NON interlaced :). Just wish that my local exchange was 21CN, as I live 100 meters from the BT exchange, and have just 3dB Line attenuation :). Roll on 2011 and 20meg ADSL :) (Not bad for a little market town in the middle of nowhere, many many many miles from london)

Some routers will tell you if your line is interleaved, otherwise you may find out by using BT's own speedtest website, or by calling Sky and asking.

Sky used to put a max delay setting on Interleaved lines of I think 32ms. A few years ago they then allowed people to have to reduced to just 8ms just by calling them. This took a ping from 70+ level down to 45 or so. I had a long line (4Mbit speed) where it was interleaved and this adjustment made a big difference to pings, although my connect speed did drop slightly.

I'm not sure if this is still the case because I no longer use a long line, now running a 20Mbit Sky connection with 30ms ping/1 ms jitter. 10db line att. Small seaside resort town in Wales.
