Lotto scratchcard query

I only scratch off the cash amount if it's a winner. So on the pic below, the 2nd card had one winner and three losers so I just scratched off the winning amount. In principle, I like to know what I've won, not what I've potentially won. Therefore, do you know why the lotto checkout staff removes the remaining material when I hand it in? Surely the barcode scanner knows how much is won on the card?

I know it's a mug's game, so don't do these often. Inb4 "worst I've won £10 thread EVAR!" At least I'm not that OcUK guy who shared his £90k(ish) syndicate story a year or two back

Theres a security code under the scratch panel they scan.

Nope they is a 4 digit code they enter in. If it was on the barcode shopstaff would scan them for the winning cards
