Hello, I don't know whether this is a problem with my HD or not but my MaxtorDiamondmax 10 is pretty loud. It's not loud as in anything to be worried about (atleast I think not) but it's really doing my head spinning.

I have an Akasa Eclipse 62 with the HD's in the front bay and was wondering if buying a Samsung or Barrucuda would fix this problem?

Just how many dB are the Samsung or Barracudas compared to my Diamondmax? Maybe even a Hitachi Deskstar?

Cheers,
Michael

Fair enough about backing up data, you should in any case but its not necessarily a sign that the hdds gonna pack in anytime soon, we've got lots of hdds running quite loudly, some even 24hrs a day without issue, they did start life quietly but over time the bearings do get a bit whiny.

Does anybody here have any experience of Maxtor Diamondmax 10's? Do you think they are loud at full rpm? Even idle sounds loud to me.

Well, I have three Maxtor DiamondMax 10 drives @ 200GB, 250GB and 300GB, and none of them are loud.

I would honestly think about contacting Maxtor about it and also trying to read off the SMART values of the drive using SpeedFan to check whether it is failing or not.

It could be the case, Akase 32 suffers greatly from amplifying inherently noisy HDDs, check the case forum once in a while :)

I have found that using the top bays (the 3.5" floppy bays) is quieter (sturdier so less vibes?), and a bungee mod for underneath is very popular.

Although my Sata drive is much quieter than my IDE's, which are older. I plan to replace the IDE's next paycheck.

(Edited, didnt mean to say it was defnitely the case!)

Ok cheers I'll try put them in the top bays. By that do you mean the ones which are in the middle top of the case or at the very front top.

You'll have (from top downwards) 4 x 5.25" bays, then 2 x 3.5" bays where a floppy drive would ordinarily go, then the internal only bays. I placed a drive in one of the 2 x 3.5" bays which would normally have a floppy, and it was significantly quieter. I think this cage is well and truly fixed, whereas the bottom one is removable (not 100% certain, going on memory). Could be vibrating more.

Least im the not only with this issue with my diamondmax 10. Mine seems to be quite loud when booting up and also loud when my applications on my desktop just after bootup load. But its fine when its idle or when doing general tasks.

Think theres a problem here or am i just overeacting lol?
