Loud popping noise when turning on power at mains

When I turn on the power to my PC at the mains after it has been off overnight I've started hearing an unusually loud popping noise coming from the PC. I think this is coming from the PSU and when I checked the back of it I can see a small spark coming from inside the PSU when I turn it on. This only happens when it has been off overnight, not if I turn it off and on again after a short interval. Is this something to be concerned about? The PSU is a 4 year old Corsair HX1000.

Replace immediately. Like right now. You don't want that small spark to turn into a big one. As @mickyflinn says, a faulty PSU can damage or destroy all the components in your PC.

The PSU is a 4 year old Corsair HX1000.

It should still be under warranty, so let Corsair take care of it.

=Corsair]
HX Series PSUs:
Models with Platinum efficiency have a 10-year warranty
Models HX520W, HX620W, and HX1000W have a 5-year warranty
All other HX Series Models have a 7-year warranty

HXi Series PSUs have a 10-year warranty

Assuming you purchased it from OCUK I'm sure they will be willing to help you.

So after a little bit of searching, apparently this could be normal inrush current when charging the capacitors and you're not supposed to turn it off at the wall, though it's strange that it only recently started happening. The PSU functions completely normally and there's no noise or sparking when it's on.

Problem is I'd still have to buy a new PSU to use while it is being RMA'd.

I have a Corsair RMx 1000W PSU that doesn't behave like this.

Problem is I'd still have to buy a new PSU to use while it is being RMA'd.

And? It's a small price to pay for not destroying your PC. How much did the PSU cost? How much did the rest of the PC cost? Can you afford to replace all the latter? Speak to Corsair.

For my RMA replacement they sent a brand new 2023 HX1000i ATX 3.0/PCIe 5.0, probably because they have no stock of the HX1000 as it looks like it's discontinued. I already replaced it with another PSU while it was being RMA'd, not sure if I should try selling the RMA replacement or keep as a spare.

Just flog it. No point holding on to it.
