Sweet. Lovely looking Toyota there, but he needs to sort that HUGE dent in the passenger's door though. Spoils the whole look of the car from that side......

Sorry penski but I'm just not getting it. You've posted loads of pics lately but to me they all just look like old sheds on deep dished rims. Surely there's more to modifying than fitting silly offset wheels and stretched tyres :confused:

(8 ball gearknobs are lower on the scale than LED washer jets IMO)

Educate me!! (but not with more pics of the same old junk though, please!)

It depends what you're after with regards to modifying your car. Most of the stuff I post are daily drivers; they're used for commuting every day and clock up ubermileages.

What's wrong with modifying a car based on looks only? Nice wheels, lowered, tidy bodywork...?

As for 'sheds'...Hardly. Both Mark and Simon's Cressidas are rot-free. Mark's got hit by someone over xmas so it has a knock on the door...which will be repaired shortly. More than 5 years old != Shed.

You have to remember that a lot of what I post is done with a wry smile and tongue FIRMLY in cheek.

I can only suggest popping over to www.retro-rides.com, browsing the galleries and then the forums; in particular, General and Reader's Rides. The range of stuff on there is amazing; from pre-war vintage up to brand new. All shapes, sizes and nationalities.

Best car forum around, in my opinion.

Believe me, I'm a big fan of modded cars, even ones with purely body mods however a set of ugly wheels and mega low springs fitted to anything pre-1970 isn't what I'd call imaginative. At least some of the Corsa/Saxo guys are *trying* to be different. (although not always succeeding)
Surely monster tyres fitted on uber fat wheels with totally innappropriate offsets fitted to cars with outdated suspension anyway would make them handle worse than a Mk2 Astra!

As I've said before - it's about being low...it doesn't matter how it handles, it doesn't matter if you take 10 minutes to get over a speed bump, it doesn't matter if you deem the offset to be 'inappropriate' - my new wheels are ET0...My car's designed for ET32-37. Oh noes...

Well, to be honest a Cressida is off to a pretty bad start as it's an ugly car to start with but that can always be changed with some nice mods. Problem is that adding a set of ugly wheels to an ugly car isn't gonna suddenly turn it into a thing of beauty.
I'm a big fan of oldish cars like Mk1 Golfs, some of them are very nicely modded but they have the huge advantage of being decent looking to start with and normally modded by people with taste.

It will still go around corners at the speed dlimit, it doesn't tramline. I (and I suspect you, originally) was referring to handling in the 'OMGZ! IT'LL PWN IT IN THEH TWISTIES!' manner so loved by many members (term used loosely) of this forum.

Depends if you do it as a novelty or whether you genuinely enjoy rolling around in a car with half an inch between the road and the crossmember.

Wheel bearings are cheap, plentiful and quickly replaced. How will the 'handling' (again, please define exactly what you mean by this...) be destroyed?

I've driven a stock-height, stock-sprung Shuv on ET10 Mattig steels and found it very sure-footed.

My car (60mm lower, SPAX springs, Koni dampers) breaks away slightly at the rear if pushed and has a slight rear-bias. A trait that was non-existant with the lower-offset wheels on the hatch...In fact, it gave an incredibly neutral balance.

What I was thinking. Will Holman fitted wider ones to his Capri and totally ruined the handling in one go

My Sprint-thing was lowered 3". That was precisely 4" too much - it actually was dangerous for the car, let alone the owner - the subframe, sills, exhaust, sump would snag on everything, it was terrifying!

There was just no way you could actually get anywhere in it OR make progress

Mantas with ET0 rims exhibit no issues...And Chevettes with ET10 rims exhibit none either....
