low 3d mark score, is this right

At a res like that i'd say you were possibly CPU bottlenecked rather than ram bottlenecked. The score seems about right with your chip at 2.4ghz.

Actually, your ram will in fact allow a mild overclock to 3ghz with that q6600.

If you do that i'm sure you'll see an extra 1k to 1500 points in 3DMark.

My old rig got around 13500 points with my GTX overclocked quite a bit and my quad at 3ghz.

Also, i'd look into that PhysX card possibly limiting your score - i've heard that in games that aren't designed to run with them they can actually have a negative effect.

Final point to remember is that benches don't matter. Get it sorted for gaming and you'll be fine.

what cpu would you recommend i get? i was thinkin of buyin E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz because overclockin is a no go, dell have locked the bios

What games are you looking to play? Even at stock the 8800GTX and q6600 combo should be perfectly ok for the vast majority of games at that res.

If you must have a faster chip then individually the e8400's cores will provide performance similar to the quads individual cores at around 3.2ghz.

Bit annoying that the BIOS is locked TBH. Can you not change anything?

If you had control over the chips multiplier and voltage then an extreme chip would allow clocking via simply upping the multi along with voltage when needed.

Finally, what FPS do you get when you use 3DMark06 and get that 11k score?

I got the following with my old 13.5k run:

Graphics Tests

1 - Return to Proxycon 46.06 FPS
2 - Firefly Forest 46.9 FPS

CPU Tests

CPU1 - Red Valley 1.58 FPS
CPU2 - Red Valley 2.3 FPS

HDR Tests

1 - Canyon Flight (SM 3.0) 51.68 FPS
2 - Deep Freeze (SM 3.0) 59.27 FPS

I've contacted dell because the card was reaching 96c and i started seeing artifacts on the screen, they suggested that the card is broke. they are goin to send a tech out on Thursday, could this be responsible for the poor performance?

Well those 3DMark frames look fine considering you're at stock so something must be up.

Not being able to play those games higher than medium is strange though as the GTX should happily eat them up.

I assume you've got a clean install of Nvidia's forceware drivers, operating system is fully updated and that all the games you're playing are patched up.

Have you used fraps to ascertain what fps you're getting in those games? I'd guess you should be seeing very decent frame rates at such a low res. Only game i'd expect problems with would be crysis - the rest should be fine.

Edit: Just saw your edit. Check for dust clogged in the GTX's heatsink. At that temp it might begin to throttle i suppose. Just surprised at the lagging you've seen. My GTX reached early 80c overclocked so i'd happily say that 96c is a little cause for concern. RMA it if you can.

graphic card
cleaned out gtx, still reaches temps of 90c+,

graphic card driver
i've used every nvidia driver known to man, the most recent one wouldn't work with vegas 2, so im using the beta driver,

Vista os
all updates installed using sp1

dell
dell are goin to replace the graphic card, its got to be the cause of the problem, especially since im seeing artifacts at high temps, i think im also going to buy new ram, ive heard dells own is crap

might buy this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-097-OC&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

The problem is that you got DELL PC...

DON'T do that,
NEVER EVER buy anything from dell, simple as that.
Unless you're buying 300PCs for huge company, dell will be your worst choice.

I think RMA'ing the card is the best option... it is running too hot.

As for the RAM if you want to swap it then i can definately recommend OCZ. I use 8gb of their PC8000 and it's great.

Let us know how you get on with it.
