I'm in the market for a new monitor and I notice that low blue light and flicker free appear to be selling points, are they just gimmicks or would they make a real difference for someone who can spend a few hours sat in front on one?

Thanks.

flicker free absolutely makes a difference on modern screens with LED backlights and will help avoid issues with eye strain, headaches and other related issues that some people experience. have a read about the old non-flicker free method for backlight dimming, Pulse Width Modulation PWM which explains more. many screens will be flicker free nowadays thankfully.

low blue light modes are a little harder to quantify but you only need to have a look around online to see all the information about how blue light can be damaging to the eyes and your health in the long run. the blue spectral output of most LED backlights on monitors is very high, and so the low blue light modes can be useful to limit that and provide a more comfortable image in the long run.

I do suffer a bit of eye strain currently so if I could avoid that I'd be happy.

I'm not sure what size to go for,I use a 24" 1080p now but I'm considering going up to a 27"/28" or maybe even a 32" but I'm not sure if having the larger size would aggravate the eye strain issue as you'd have a bigger screen right in front of your head rather than still allowing some natural light into your field of vision.

Also I think you need a higher res monitor as the screen size increases?

what are your main uses for the screen? the 3 Asus models are gaming orientated screens based on TN Film panel technology so will be more limited in some areas than other more all-round technologies like VA and IPS.

in terms of size and res, i would consider whether you find the font size comfortable or not on your current 24" 1080p model? a 27" 2560 x 1440 model will have slightly smaller font (you can tell from the pixel pitch spec by the way). a 32" model at 2560 x 1440 would be a bit bigger. so just depends how you find the current screen i think.

I scale up quite a lot on my 24" now.

Was looking at the Asus models for the certified low blue light and the other eye care stuff they offer.

As I sit here now I am 3 feet 10 inches away from the screen.

More often than not it's only me in here so don't have to worry about viewing angles.

I believe your problem is that you're sitting on the short edge of your desk :D

But yeah, if you're that far back and don't wish to be closer, I'd really be considering a 32" or larger. I have a 32 QHD sat at arm's length and it's nice for immersive games and productivity, but probably too large for FPS and twitch-reaction titles.

Cheers, I think I'll try that 32 AOC I posted earlier.

The desk is a custom built thing I made myself, monitor is on a shelf about 7" above at the rear wall and I have plenty of space for my other kit too.

:)
