I'm interested in your favorite low carb recipes, any suggestions welcome.

They should to be simple(ish) to make, preferably low fat / carb, high in protein, and no more than an hour and a half for prep and cooking time. Maximum tastiness too, nothing bland please :)

This is basically to help me build a recipe book of my own, to complement my pathetic efforts at the gym.

If you go low fat and low carb you'll be in trouble, if you want to go low carb look into paleo and Keto diets, check the Sports section, lots of information there.

Thanks, but I'm looking for recipes that people have actually tried, tested, and maybe even personalized a bit. People's genuine favorites.

Anyone can quickly Google anything, and it feels... Ah fk it. You're right, just forget it, Google will tell me what to eat. :(

Here's one of my favourites and it's dead easy...

Soften an onion with a little chilli and garlic.
Place in the bottom of a casserole dish (I use a 7" pyrex one).
Pour over a large tin of pilchards in tomato sauce and level it out but try not to mash them up, I like bug chunks of the fish.
Pour over a few beaten eggs.
Bake till eggs are set.
Eat!

Great with a salad. Just as good cold the next day. Sprinkle cheese on top before cooking if you feel the need (as I used to) but I don't think it needs it. You can also try red pepper in with the onion, that's nice too but depends on my mood!

Anything you would normally eat but either leave out the carbs or replace it with something else.

Last night I had cod, broccoli and carrots. Normally I might have some new potatoes but I just had a bit more broccoli and carrots.

Salad is good and quick, find the things you like and experiment with additional option. I've found the ready prepared babyleaf + rocket from Tesco as a good addition to the standard lettuce (cos), pepper, onion, tomato, cucumber etc. Get some radishes, grated carrot, beetroot etc

The salad can go well with any kind of protein, chicken breast, turkey steak, grilled fish, tuna.

Omlettes with your preference for filling, optional cheese.

Ratatouille is great as well. Tasty and loads of fairly low carb veg. Aubergine, courgette, pepper, onion. Tins of tomatos, plenty of garlic and herbs, simmer it away. Really easy an healthy.

Fruit has quite high sugars, but still good to keep some.

I basically keep stocked up with salad, veg I like and some fruit. With meat in the freezer and a dozen eggs I can make quite a few things.

Even veg/meat curries are good, skip over anything with potato and just don't have the sides (rice, bread).

Soup is also good, specially if you have a load of veg that needs using up, all in a pot and simmer away, bonus if you have some meat bones for flavour.

Depending on how your current diet is the removal of 'carbs' is quite easy, for me it was as simple as stop including bread, pasta, rice and potato in/with food.

Lots of things can be done low carb by simply not cooking a load of carbs to go with it - cut out the bread, pasta, potatoes, rice.

E.g., today I will eat a great chili, served with small side salad (mostly tomatoes, peppers). Very few carbs. I tend to add more vegetables to the chili than some (carrots, green and red peppers, a bit of celery) and of corue lots of beans, this bulks out the food with nutritious veg and makes the dish tastier.

Curries are alo excellent without rice/nann bread. Stews and things work well. Bigger salads with a grilled chicken breast etc.

Basically replace pure carbs like pasta with vegtables, salads and fruit. If you do want rice or pasta, make sure it is brown and eat sparingly.

Well if I stop eating all together then obviously I'm going to die, so I wont take that suggestion. And I'm not talking about cutting out fats altogether, just reducing my saturated fats.

Honestly if you've got nothing to contribute, Mr Man of Honor 2006, then can you go troll somewhere else? Its not like I'm trying to be controversial here, I'm just asking what peoples favorite recipes are ffs.

From your replies in this thread you seem quite highly strung! Relax you'll live longer.
Based on the information you provided in your first post FF is right cutting both carbs and fat will leave you in a bad way as your body needs at least one of them for energy it's something that some people need pointing out as they think that the more they cut out the better their results will be, also you don't really need to worry about sat fats if they're coming from natural unprocessed sources such as meat, butter, avocados etc.

1) Wind your neck in
2) Calm yourself down
3) Sort your attitude else you won't last here long
4) I am not a troll - though I am an ex Mod which is probably the same looking at it! :D

Clearly my comment about not eating was not serious - it was merely an exasperation at your suggestions of what to eat.

In spite of your extremely rude post I will still offer the following advice - take it or leave it, but do not talk to me like that again.

You suggest low fat and low carb - you will seriously struggle getting all your calories in to survive or at least be healthy.

Are you active? What do you do? How much do you currently eat? How good is your current diet?

You've told us very little - you've just stated you want low carb and low fat - that tells us nothing. Your goals are clearly to lose weight - but you've not given us much more to go on.

Good fats are good for you and necessary, our bodies are designed to eat fats and proteins, and to an extent carbs (though not refined/processed carbs that are ubiquitous these days). Some saturated fat isn't going to do you much harm and actually are good for you, certainly poly and mono unsaturated are vital for good health. Personally I'd say a few carbs via veg are perfectly acceptable.

AS for low carb any of the following would be fine:

Omelettes using egg whites only (however, why bother? use the full egg!)
Any form of meat (or lean meat if you're that bothered)
Meat and vegetable stews
Turkey steaks
Any meat grilled
Tinned or fresh fish
Meatballs in a tomato sauce
Mincemeat in various guises
Minced turkey or pork is also versatile - you can make meatballs or patties out of theses too.
You can make some good tomato based sauces that give the meat a bit of texture and moistness
as much veg as you like (in fact it's crucial to get some veg in)

If you're happy to take in some carbs, cous cous, sweet potato are great for bulking up the food a little.

How about this salad:

Green leaf salad
Spinach
couple of boiled eggs
Toasted Pine kernels
Fried lardons
Shredded grilled chicken breast
Olive oil
Salt and pepper

Here is a breakdown of my food yesterday - low carb, high protein and high fat.

Poached eggs on smoked mackerel fillets
50g of mixed unsalted un roasted nuts
nectarine
apple
banana
1/4 roast chicken with 3 very large handfuls of salad with olive oil salt and pepper with a small cup of cous cous mixed in.
230g grilled salmon fillet
French beans
Corn on the cob

That's how I eat every day almost (not the same foods) - it's not difficult to keep excessive carbs out.

Generally no, I'm quite relaxed and easy going most of the time. My first reply was meant as an attempt at humor, which obviously failed. But I felt quite relaxed when I was typing it. The second reply, yes I was a bit annoyed.

Cant help, you may as well not eat.

Not really constructive or helpful imo, just a sort of "you're a noob, now go and die lol". But if I'm being stressy and unreasonable then I apologize. I only wanted a few recipes.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, you were being unreasonable.

One of my favourite low carb recipes is as simple as savoury mince. Get plenty of garlic and paprika in there (amongst others) and you've got a really simple but tasty dish. You can use lean meat if you must, but use olive oil when browning your meat. Serve with mashed Jicama if you can get it or even mashed Cauliflower.

Remember that you must have some fats in your diet.

Ok then, I get the message. I'm sorry. I'm honestly not here to annoy people, I like being on good terms with everyone where ever possible. And once again I apologize for being rude or unreasonable, its not who I am.

Lets work through your post...

1) Wind your neck in - Ok
2) Calm yourself down - Agreed
3) Sort your attitude else you won't last here long - I'll do that
4) I am not a troll - though I am an ex Mod which is probably the same looking at it! :D - Mods often make the best trolls. But I got you wrong, sorry again.

Clearly my comment about not eating was not serious - it was merely an exasperation at your suggestions of what to eat. - The problem with terse comments in text is lack of emotional context. What you believe as clear is actually open to interpretation. My interpretation was of a well established forum member picking on someone for not being as knowledgeable. This occurs quite often on various forums (you should know this). I got it wrong, sorry again, but in mitigation it was not clear to me either.

In spite of your extremely rude post I will still offer the following advice - take it or leave it, but do not talk to me like that again. - That's extremely kind and gracious of you.

You suggest low fat and low carb - you will seriously struggle getting all your calories in to survive or at least be healthy. - Ok, I need to read up a bit on this. But my goal is to eat more healthily, loose body fat, etc. Not to starve myself to death.

Are you active? What do you do? How much do you currently eat? How good is your current diet? - I work out three times a week, mostly resistance training with a bit of cardio for warm up / down. My current diet is, um, mediocre. But that's what I'm working on now.

You've told us very little - you've just stated you want low carb and low fat - that tells us nothing. Your goals are clearly to lose weight - but you've not given us much more to go on. - Typical male stuff really, lose weight, build muscle. I don't want to be the incredible bulk, but I'm working on being muscular without looking ridiculously big.

- Good advice, noted and thanks.

If you want any advice regarding your goals and not just recipes drop into the sports arena, we don't bite apart from Morba he likes a nibble.

Well I'm glad we've ironed out our misunderstanding :)

For the best help, I'd suggest you come and visit us in the SA as Tom suggested - sounds like you're on the right track, but some more tailored advice more related to exercise, sports, diet and nutrition would be better had in the SA.

I like wraps rather than bread, if im trying to be healty and avoid loafed bread, chicken salad.

Meat cooks better imo with fat on it seems to make iit moist and tender / juicy. Hence rump or rib eye is my favourite steak and it's midde bacon with rind on.

Try this if you like Chinese cooking.

1 Can of Coke, 5 table spoons of Soy Sauce, 2 table spoons of Chilli Sauce.

Add all in a pan and heat on a high temp until it starts to thicken. Add which ever meat you have that day and enjoy. Maybe add some onions.

It's like a low carb hot sweat and sour.
