Low end isn't improving...

Dont forget the 6870 was near enough a 5870 so I wouldn't classify anything near a 6870's level of performance low end

The 5870 is considerably more powerful than a 6870. It matches the 6950 2GB

£100 can't be low end as the 6870 is surely a mid-range card.

I'd say the low end lies in between APU performance and the 6870.

I know people who would spend £70 on a graphics card and think they were getting a powerful card. Though in my experience budget gamers buy old gen cards rather than the lowest end of the new gen.

Same here. In fact, i used to be one of them (long, long ago).

I'd say £20-40 is media centre or basic workstation stuff, £50-100 is low end or casual gamer, £100-150 (maaaybe up to 200) is medium or mainstream gamer, and anything above that is enthusiast only.

The kind of people who spend £200 just on a graphic card are very rare, never mind 300, 500, or 800.

I was being a bit liberal with the phrase near enough as it more accuratly sits firmly between a 5850 and 5870. A 10% diff doesn't alter the playability of a game and makes them near enough equivalent to me in the scope of performance that you can put together.

I read just the other day that the PS4 will be using a modified 7970 GPU

No chance. The costs of the unit would be astronomical.

You have to remember that they can't just drop any old GPU into it as and when they drop in price. They will have a hardware spec and conduct throrough testing on that hardware. To change one of the most important parts would put them back a long way.

Eh, I don't get the issue. If a PS4 used a 7670 it'd still be extremely powerful for what it is. Considering the PS3 now uses, what, a 7800 series card? The difference in performance would be absolutely massive, and the PS3 can pump out decent visuals considering its hardware.

Exactly, but it depends when its released really. If it releases late next year with a 7670 or equivalent then it may be underwhelming. If it launches late 2013/early 2014 then a 7970 derivative is slightly more likely.

I'm not sure it matters that much really. When the PS3 was released, the 7800GTX chip was already old technology, and it's lasted up until now and can still push out decent graphics.

Also it's worth pointing out that whilst the PS3 GPU is derrived from a 7800GTX chip, its performance is actually a fair amount lower and fits in somewhere just above the 7600 series GPUs, which would actually tie in with what they'd be doing here.

Of course, something like a 7970 derivative would ideally be better but I don't think it's that realistic unless it's a die shrunk version, which I can't see happening any time soon.

PS3s have enough issues with heat already, and I'd imagine a HD79X0 series GPU or something derived from it would put out more heat than the PS3's GPU.

I would argue the ps3 can't put out decent graphics anymore. The textures look horrendously low quality IMO. This was glossed over by most fast moving games but in most games the textures look appalling. Also dips into the 20's in terms of FPS aren't acceptable.

If they can put a 7970 derivative into a laptop I'm sure they can put it in a ps4. Most per unit will be the main sticking point.

Of course they could do it. Its extremely unlikely and there's no precedent for putting a top end recent GPU in a console anyway.

Also ignoring the fact that a 7970 laptop costs north of £1000 :D.

The link above is pc v ps3 sleeping dogs side by side. I think for the age of the ps3 the visuals are quite impressive. Obviously the pc version is vastly superior and so it should be but those ps3 visuals are still pretty good for what is very aged hardware.

Not too bad tbf but lacking in quite a bit of detail. Tesselation sure makes things look pretty. I still use a PS3 but mainly as a media server now.

*Ahem* Nobody has any idea what the specs of the PS4 will be. All rumours are just that. Rumours. I could go and start another one right now by writing an article about how the PS4 will use a modified GTX650 chip. Won't make it true.
