Anybody any ideas on this one?

A friend and I installed a steam game called MX vs ATV. At first he didn’t notice anything was wrong his end until we started playing each other online. When we play each other online if we play an indoor track with not so many graphics everything is equal. We can play a fair race. If we try an outdoor track with more graphics to it I get a massive unfair advantage. My bike is always a lot faster than his. We have double checked we are both on the same bike. We both get about 12 Meg download speed and 1 meg upload speed. Both our pings are pretty much the same as well. To see if Windows was somehow at fault my friend reinstalled Windows. Doing that didn’t help.

As a test we then both started the same race offline. I was able to complete my track in about 2 minutes yet it took my mate about 3 minutes 20. It was not down to our game play just the speed his game was running at. Even in a not so graphic intense indoor race offline I am still able to complete a race much faster than my friend.

After doing some testing with fraps it seems he was only getting 18 FPS for really intense graphics races and I was getting 60. For indoor tracks he was getting 20 FPS and I was getting 60 FPS. I assume the FPS is why I got the unfair advantage in the online play and why also in an offline track I can complete a lap much faster?

We then went to can you run it website and checked the minimum spec for the game. They are

Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0 GHz Processor or better
1 GB XP, 2 GB Vista/Windows
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT 256 MB graphics card or better

My friend passed on everything except ram as he only had 1.5 GB in. So to see if more ram would improve things he went out and bought another 2 GB. With 3GB in the FPS went down from 17 to 14 (compatibility issue with the old 1 GB and new 2 GB ram?). He then kept with just the new 2 GB ram. With only the new 2 GB ram in the FPS went back up to 17. This as you know is still terrible.

So at the moment on my friends PC he has

Win 7 32bit service pack 1
2 GB ram
Geforce GTS 450 1 GB
Core 2Duo E4500 2.20GHz
On his PC he is currently getting 20 FPS for an indoor track and 18 FPS for an outdoor track.

According to the specs given by can you run it website my friend should easily be able to play this game.

The specs of my PC are

Windows 7 64bit service pack 1
8 GB ram
GTX 580
i7 2600K (at stock at the moment)
Asus P8P67 pro

I get a constant 60 FPS for an indoor track and pretty much a constant 60 FPS for an outdoor track.

Anybody any ideas why my friend is getting such low FPS? Am I right in saying if we play the same race offline and I am able to complete it about 1 minute faster it is simply down to the fact I get higher FPS? I assume this is also the reason why in online races my bike is much faster than his?

What I don't understand is when we play online if we play an indoor race we are equal in terms of speed with my friend getting 20 FPS and me getting 60 FPS. Yet in an outdoor race with my friend getting 18 FPS and me getting 60 I can race much faster than him.

15 GPS would be like a slide slow, hence the slow times. meeting the minimum specs means the PC will run the game which your friends machine does, minimum specs does not guarantee performance, he needs a better gpu.

I thought a GTS 450 was a much better speced card than a 7800 GT which is the minimum spec GPU for this game?

The graphics card should be good for more FPS than that, I'd point at his CPU speed as the issue. A mild overclock will no doubt help.

Also windows 64/32 might make a difference,if he got 64 he could use more ram,cpu graphics o/c or upgrade ,your system is massively superior
