Difficult job or easy job for complete novice at car maintenance but is willing to give it a go to save giving big money to a garage to do it ?
 
Depends entirely on the car and which arm it is.

Some cars its easy, some cars like the Mondeo require you to lift the gearbox to remove the passenger side arm.
 
Are the arms also know as the Wishbones ? If so mine were changed 20k miles ago - should they really need changing again ?

God I hate car ownership sometimes - muchos stresso :(

Yes they are, and no 20k miles is a very short life. However, where genuine wishbones fitted last time? The bushes on some of the Chinese pattern parts have the life expectancy of a mayfly.
