Lower Wattage Phenom II

I understand that the Phenom II quad 955 processor and its similar cpus were originally around 125-140 W but this has been reduced to 95W. All processors selling for the same price regardless of power consumption rating.

1) Is this true?
2) Are the lower wattage chips worth seeking out?
3) Is there anyway I can tell if the advert doesn't say?
4) Is it just a matter of time as the older higher wattage stock is sold before they are all 95ish W

Thanks

Hello magunn,

welcome to OcUK forums! :)

Are you focusing on the AMD Phenom II products for a particular reason? Is there scope here to discuss other options or are you dead set on getting some AMD goodies!

^nothing wrong in getting AMD goodies :) , i knw at the moment AMD is out of question, but do keep this thing in minds i5 onli focuses on mid end pcs in present, whreas i7 and AM3 focus on 6 core cpu :)
P.S,my apology m nt being offensive, jst talking thru
@poster, well yes AMD is releasing 95w version of 965 and 955 soonn enough ,and we will also b able to see a 3.6 ghz cpu :D

As I understand, all Phenom II X4 955 Black are still 125W processors and the 965 Black are 140W. These processors will be appearing in 95W and 125W guise respectively in the near future, though whether this is going to happen before or after the new "C3" stepping I'm not so sure.

If we see these lower TDP processors before the C3 stepping, I'm not so sure that they are worth seeking out as such. Pretty much all AMD K10.5's seem to max out around the same place (providing HTT Base clock isn't a limiting factor) and it's usually anywhere between 3.7GHz and 4.0GHz.

Why is it that everytime someone mentions AMD you always get some Intel loving guy coming along and asking if you really want to go the AMD route!!

its called competition and there's a lot of it out there right now. fortunately (much to your distain) there are people on the forums who are only interested in recommended the best gear regardless of who makes it.

...and you rolleyes at that? it's not a bad thing, he was onyl asking the question :)

i do agree, but people try to help to get the best performance for they money..

personly performance isn't everything. i go for amd because they have great features...

Hey raptormonkey,

I thought I worded my post correctly?

Don't get me wrong I really rate AMD and I am aware thanks to their great products in the market place we are all able to buy hardware at a reduced cost . . . . I fear INTEL prices would rocket if AMD wasn't offering competition and that's not good news for anyone!

Believe it or not I am here on the forums to learn and I have a particular interest in low powered computing hence my question to magunn, if he is putting low power consumption to the top of his purchasing decisons list their is several options available to him . . .

If people are open minded and can have a conversation where facts are presented and can be analyzed/discussed/justified etc then all the people involved may be able to benefit!

AMD or INTEL doesn't matter, what matters IMHO is the purchaser gets the hardware he/she wants with the confidence that their hard earned wages have been spent wisely! :)

Now enough talk about that, lets find out what it is exactly that floats magunn's boat and see if we can help him get the best bang for buck!

Let's discuss, not point fingers and call "Fanboy!" :p

Well, AMD are great bang for buck. Especially the 550 CPU as that overclockers very well indeed. Plus you may be lucky to find one that is able to have its dormant 2 cores unlocked making it a quad!!

Sorry to semi-hijack this thread, but I thought it may also be useful to the op. Would overclocking an i5 750 to say the clock speed of the Phenom II 955 mean that it would then be quite close to the Phenom's 125w? Or would the default clock speed of the i5 at 2.66Ghz still remian competitive with the 955's 3.2Ghz?

Well, AMD are great bang for buck

I agree with what you say however you appear to be pointing out things that are important to you and may/may not be relevant to magunn who may not even be wanting to overclock etc (not everyone does)

Lower wattage/TDP is a boon not only for overclockers but also to people that want a fast & cool system running at stock that is easy going on the old electric bill £££ :)

The key here is not to assume everyone elses wants/needs are the same as your own . . . if in doubt then ask questions . . which is what I did!

What about the new Athlon's due out? Not sure on the specifics but i think it's been confirmed that there's an Athlon X4 605e which is a 2.5GHz Quad with a TDP of... wait for it... 45W. Imagine the overclocking potential! Only thing is that it has no L3 cache, but it's amazing how few programs are actually that cache intensive.

I only asked as I read that the chios had two types and I thought the lower wattage one would be better.
Real newbie (at nearly 50!) in high spec pc building, but I have around £250 FOR A CPU/MOBO combination and i am really torn between a Phenom II 955 or faster now or waiting for the i5 prices to ease.

Money burning hole in pocket. Already have the rest of the kit. Don't want to start an AMD/Intel row again but any one got any advice

It depends of what you will be using it for id say. Both are good choices although I think the new i5 are meant to be slightly better value than AMD's Phenom II X4 955 at the moment.
