Yo guys! :p

I just want to ask, what can I do to reduce my ping?

I thought the faster upstream you have ment that the lower your ping would be, but I think i'm totaly wrong. I have 2meg ( upstream 7 KB/s ) and my mate who lives a few streets down has 5meg ( 380 kb/s, thats about... 50 KB/s? ) and my pings are better than his... :confused:

Both of us tested our pings 3 times, with no other line activity, and his is about 20 - 40ms higher than mine.

So.. what can I do to lower my ping, if anything?
 
It's to do with the actual time it takes for your packet to hit the server at the end. You could be shoving gigabytes per minute, but imagine if that's only transmitting every 5 seconds... not going to be good for games!

There isn't really anything you can do to be honest, most of it (If not all) will be down to your geographical distance from the exchange.
 
How come there's like a 20ms difference between me and my mate, he lives closer to the exchange, not by much tho lol.

So basically if I want realy good pings i'll have to move very near to an exchange :eek: Think i'll pass on that ;P
 
It could be to do with many things, bad cables, routers, wireless, bad lines, all sorts. Chances are it'll be very fiddly to get any improvement.

If you're running a router let us know what brand it is, I think some have certain issues.
 
If you are both on different ISP's, then that will have as big an affect on ping as anything else will tbh.

Ping times are mostly affected by:

Very Basic - Distance between you and whatever you are pinging
Less Basic - The route taken to get there (determined by your ISP)

Is there a easy way to find out what ISP would give xx ping to xx server, rather than asking people?
