LPG Coversion, what do you think?

Averaged about 26mpg in the new 620ti, and loving it!

I can afford the fuel, but do about 20k a year and wondered if it was worth considering an LPG conversion, as I plan to keep the car for a good long time yet.

I was told it could damage the turbo, but not sure about this. Are there any other problems that it could cause?
Thanks
Mat

I've thought about this in the past just because I am a tight wad. I reckon it's only worth doing if you are buying a 2nd hand already converted motor. That way somebody else swallows the fitting fee & you reap the benefits of cheaper MPG.

The £1500 odd it costs to fit will buy you a lot of petrol. When running on LPG it will also get lower MPG than running on petrol so you will probaly be getting around 22-23mpg that eats into the savings on the cost of fuel aswell. I would calculate how many miles it would take to make your money back on doing the conversion I suspect it would be a lot of miles.

LPG is tricky for performance turbo cars. Anything that uses only vapour phase injection is inviting melted pistons, even you you are able to inject enough enough vapour to get a suitable AFR under high RPM/boost conditions (which is a problem). Most kits will switch back to petrol injection under these conditions to protect the engine.

Liquid phase injection is a possibility, but these are quite new and expensive systems. However, you can actually gain power from these, and the higher octane will allow more boost before detonation is a problem.

As soon as you mention melted pistons I knew it was time to give up, my Ti has 'chocolate pistons' that can't really take any more heat than standard.

Need to find something else to spend my money on now :p

The vapour phase systems that switch back to petrol injection when the engine is under load are pretty safe, I've heard of several Imprezas with these system fitted. However, they do tend to partially negate the advantages unless you drive around very steadily all the time.

lpgs one of those things that nice to have but only if its already been fitted, absolutely love it on the bimmer, bar the severely reduced boot space

I think his username was "aboard epsilon" or something similar, he converted either a 420 or 420T to run on LPG.

Massive thread on him doing it on MG Rover.org, might have it bookmarked at home.

Wasnt as simple as you would hope.
