We have a Windows Server 2008 print server with a Konica MFD installed.
Within the driver settings on this it is configured with an LPR queue rather than RAW, at the suggestion of Konica.

Now, on Windows PCs this is fine the driver is pulled off the server and this is set automatically, or at worst I can manually set it on each PC.
Each job spools to the print queue as required.

However, I have no idea how this translates to the Mac.
It appears that LPR is only available if I set it up to print directly to the printer, rather than via the servers print queue?

Is this correct?

We have the same setup at our place, which I setup.

How are you blinding the macs to the windows domain so that the mfd knows which user is printing? We use a third party plugin and use its own protocol to push it to the queue, but LDP is fine should be fine.

You can push it to a queue rather than the printer itself by referencing the queue and the machine that its on. So <ip address or name of machine>/<print queue> will send the info to the required queue. Controlling colour or BW needs to be done at the client down rather than the server/queue.

Drivers shouldn't be an issue, I just installed the required drivers as part of the image or via ARD and when you map the printer queue; os x should know what drivers to use.

Mapping the printer can/should be done via scripts or copying CUPs settings or within the image. It all depends on how you got your MFDs working on the windows network and how many macs you have; how you want them to print.

Thank you. I will try it like that then.
The Macs were just added to the domain through Accounts and Logon Server - I found the document somewhere as Macs aren't my main area!

The printer itself is not aware of the specific user, as it all normally routes through the print server. Also the authentication on the printer is set to allow 'Public' users as we don't lock down/log jobs directly.

That's fine then, we have accounts so users/department gets billed for printing, and the MDF don't print out till they login into the printer with their mifare cards. So the konica server needs to know who actually requested the print job.

LDAP service needs to be enabled on the server, as macs use LDAP and not AD... but with no form of login on your print system it shouldn't matter, I don't think.

In my shop, the students prints are all costed (charged against AD account), so for the Macs we just use the Windows print queues, added through ARD using 'lpadmin' and use SMB://<address>
