Lube me up

I fitted a Tutoro automatic oiler. I'll never have to buy a can of chain lube again, and the chain stays looking like new rather than clagged up with old chain lube that needs to be cleaned off.

However I used to use the Wurth stuff before I fitted it, much better than some of the others I tried that remained sticky and attracted dirt.

Some places do a twin pack with a chain cleaner so worth having a look if you need some :)

Just bought the stuff as there were a load of other things i was buying from M&P. Good call on reminding me about a chain cleaner. I have **** loads of ACF50 and will use that in conjunction with a chain brush to clean it up when i need to.

The stuff you posted is not suitable for winter riding, the salt breaks it down. But if you dont plan to ride in rainy/cold/salted roads its awesome stuff. I use it on the decent bike and swap to a more wet lube for the winter on the commuter bike.

Damn. Looks like I should get a chain wax as well then for the winter.

I cant stand the mess from wet chain lube :p
I personally use the dry stuff all winter, as long as you keep up on maintenance theres no problem.

That being said I have used this before and would recommend it: SDoc100 White Chain Spray

I would use the dry stuff but I am going to be riding every day, even if it rains. Which means I'll have to clean, dry and reapply every day. I'd like to just apply once a week ideally.

Scottoiler.

That's the ideal solution in the long term :) but need something in the meantime.

Just ordered a couple of wet lubes, Motul and Castrol.

The Tutoro automatic oiler is cheaper and easier to install than the Scottoiler (no vacuum or electrical connections to make). I put one on my dads SV650 last weekend and it only took 1/2 hour or so, and that was making a really tidy job by fabricating some brackets so the hose was hidden as much as possible. If you aren't too fussy and just use the cable ties supplied it would be a 10/15 minute job.

It's fine in the winter. I've used the stuff for the last 2 winters now (since I started riding). Absolutely fine. I do apply quite often though particularly when it rains.

I never really thought of using ACF50 to clean the chain, quite a good idea actually to get that extra bit of water repellent & protection. Does it clean it up nicely?

What lube do these automatic oilers take?

Have use the Wurth lube for years and it's good stuff. As soon as i get back from a ride and the bike is on the paddock stand, the back wheel gets a few spins along with a quick spray of lube on the chain. Recently i started to use Motorex Lube because i fitted a gold chain. Just as good as Wurth, but when it's dry it's a translucent white.

It's good, but time consuming. You have to make sure you cleaned it good and got as much off as possible before applying lube again.

Scottoiler here too.
And at those prices, I'd not even contemplate anything else.

My SO was about £60, IIRC... Within a few thousand miles, it's saved FAR more money than the cost of lube cans. Personally I'd just splash out, going straight in with the SO and be done with it!!

The companies that supply the oilers also supply their own oil formula, e.g. Scottoiler and Tutoro oil is about £6-7 for 500ml. However plenty of people just use engine oil, gear oil, ATF or even chainsaw oil which are all quite a bit cheaper.

The oil drips on at a very slow rate so 500ml will last for many thousands of miles.
