It would appear that it was a parachute "stack" that didn't quite go to plan and his buddy may well have initially caught his shoot unintentionally. Still quick thinking and a good save.

That article seemed a bit confusing?
Did they the two get tangled or did the top one actually 'catch' the other on purpose to save him?
 
I was thinking the same AJF. They usually deploy their chutes plenty high enough to cut away and hit the reserve if the primary doesn't open. They also usually do a little canopy formation flying hence thinking along your logic that on joining up or separation things went a little wrong.

Who knows though??
