Lulzsec!

They probably play WoW which is why they didn't target it. If all they wanted to do was annoy people WoW is standing in the middle of a shooting gallery with a bullseye on its chest.

Play wow but dont play minecraft / eve? unlikely. More likely wow has some other element to it such as it being better defended? their patch days must be the equivalent of ddos attack and they cruise through that by taking down webpages and forums so I imagine they are not an 'easy' target so dont pose as much interest.

Eve is relatively capable of weathering a DDoS attack - tho nothing short of throwing an insane amount of hardware at it really copes with a DDoS attack. CCP decided pretty early on that best route to take would be to take their infrastructure offline rather than struggle through the DDoS and leave themselves potentialy vulnerable to more serious attacks (given the number of other game companies actually hacked into).

Minecraft being a much smaller effort, mostly the work of one guy funded by donations and a smaller commercial enterprise is in a worse position to deal with a serious DDoS.

Seems like people who sit in front of their PC's all day long and lack any sort of social skills as they've been literally bought up on 4chan's /b/.

They would be most offended to hear you say that since they seem to hate /b/ :p

Woke up this morning and eve was back up and I'd lost not time on my training queue... I especially liked their tirade at 4chan after... showed them for exactly what they are, immature frustrated geeks just wish I could see the look on their faces when some of them get caught and reality catches up to them aka hard time. If they think they can hide behind a few distributed proxies and/or a bit of wifi wardriving in this day and age they are sadly mistaken.

Yeah I had to put a skill on as the queue I had - had finished. :(

HAHAHA just had someone send a spam mail out I guess trying to gain access after the indecent with EVE

A message from our COO.

At 17:00 UTC today, CCP became aware of a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) against the EVE Online cluster and web servers.

Our policy in such cases is to mobilize a taskforce of internal and external experts to evaluate the situation. At 17:55 UTC, that group concluded that our best course of action was to go completely offline while an exhaustive scan of our entire infrastructure was executed.

While some may feel that such a drastic reaction was not warranted, it is always our approach to err on the side of caution in order to ensure the best possible service for our players and the security of their personal, billing and account information.

We understand the effect this disruption has had for our players and apologize for not having been able to explain fully to the community what was going on. In these cases it can often be counterproductive to containment to give out information while we are in the process of evaluating the scope of any potential problem.

Our taskforce concluded at 22:05 that neither the game servers nor the CCP infrastructure had been breached. Further, we can also confirm that some personal details such as users' credentials or credit card numbers were exposed through this incident.

Please check yourself if your personal details was compromised by visiting Account Management page .

The servers were brought back online at 23:00 and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Again, we sincerely apologize for this disruption.

Regards,

Jón Hörðdal

Chief Operating Officer

Always someone else who tries another step

How silly of them...

hah there phoneline is accepting targets for next. please for the love of jebus I hope they take down every EA server and page.

It's fine. They'll fade in history like every other nobody, their actions here today will be forgotten as the passage of time moves forwards. They'll fade into the oblivion of time, and be forgotten, just as their pointless and their delusions of grandeur shall.

It's about time some white hats rocked up in the FFFUBoat and urinated in their cereal.

I was chatting with a security contractor just the other day and polled his opinion on this. He has been in IRC channels with the guys who perpetrate these attacks and he says they pretty much just take targets at random ALA "Hey, shall we attack X?"

Bunch of muppets.

They are giving white hats jobs by showing how vulnerable websites can be. If white hats attacked LulzSec, they would cease to be white hats.

And of course it's random, they are doing it for a laugh.
